June 29, 201114 yr Yep had to grind off the galv around where I wanted to weld, you have to get it all off. Just curious - Did you consider zinc rich coatings as an alternate to hot dip galvanizing. Some of the industrial grade products are pretty effective when the metal is properly prepared. Might have been able to use the hot dip galvanized material only where the steel was embedded in the concrete and coated the rest. Of coarse I know nothing of the environment of the installation. When there is no choice about welding galvanized metal I normally remove the zinc with applications of phosphoric acid and power brushing in order to avoid most of the required grinding. Then touch up the welds with ZRC. However I prefer exclusive application of the zinc rich coatings if the exposure allows.
January 20, 201214 yr Did you spray the graphite mix paint with a hvlp spray gun?I have a gate I'm finishing that I want to use that mix with, and I want to spray it with our shop spray setup. Thanks
