Joseph Tinsley Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 so i have a jug of sulphuric acid (aka. battery acid) can i use this to etch metal? i have heard about all of these specialty acids and i am wondering if it would be cheaper and more easily accesible this way if it will etch. thanks for any replies Quote
ThomasPowers Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 Yes you can use H2SO4. Remember that you will want to dilute it as strong acid does not do as good a job as weaker acid does in differentiating pattern welded material. REMEMBER: Always Add Acid to Water, and NEVER the Reverse! Quote
Joseph Tinsley Posted March 22, 2011 Author Posted March 22, 2011 i was going to try it on some of that wrought iron i picked up. yeah they drilled that safty procedure into us in high school. Quote
ianinsa Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 when you run a test piece, large bubbles and/or smoke = too strong acid etching acid should cause small bubbles to break at the surface and break small bubbles with a feather to achieve a smoother etch. P.S. The fumes released are seriously detrimemtal to your health. P.S.S. The fumes released from the sulphuric acid are also explosive wich too can be detrimemtal to your health. TAKE HEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck Ian Quote
