harrismetalsmith
I bought this drill press off ebay yesterday for $300. Today we brought it to the shop and hooked it up to see it run. It is a beast! 2 h.p. OLD SCHOOL, 3 phase. The best part is it has a power feed on the quill. All of the speeds and gears work great. I am very excited, there are some good deals to be had out there right now, it seems. The vice in the photo was a temporary rig to test the machine. I have one question. The power feed runs in a contained gear box, filled with oil. What type? Heavy gear oil? I downloaded the original manual but it didn't say. fciron
That's a nice looking machine. My big drill press in missing the power feed. I don't think you could go wrong with gear oil in the power feed; it's not a high pressure or even that high speed an application.
ptree
Since that feed gear appears to be a worm and gear wheel I would definetly use a gear oil. You have sliding and extreme pressure in worm drives and that is why gear box oils are rated by the AGMA American Gear Manufacturers Assoc. These are rated by various schemes but good old 80-90 gear oil would sure be a good start.
