February 5, 201115 yr Is there a place on this website, or a book that's availiable, that shows all the known anvils? I have a couple that I'd like to identify and find out the history behind them. I bet I should have done a search before asking (yikes).
February 5, 201115 yr There is no one page on this site that shows the different anvils available. "Anvils in America" by Richard Postman is the 'go to' book of anvils. He does not list prices as that is too subjective. You can buy an anvil here in my neck of the woods cheaper than you can say on the west coast. You can also post some good pics here on IFI and we can give you most of the info you would want. Amazon, eBay, and the like has the above mentioned book if you want a copy of your very own. BTW, where in TEXAS are you? I'm in the eastern part just off of I-20, 120miles east of Dallas, 60miles west of Shreveport, LA.
February 5, 201115 yr There is a whole section of IForgeIron devoted to anvils and questions about anvils. The thread "show me your anvil" has over 40 posts. In the IForgeIron Gallery, results for the term anvil limited to the first 200. There are 8+ pages of reference there. As Thomas Dean said "Anvils in America" by Richard Postman is THE BOOK.
February 7, 201115 yr "Across the street" at anvilfire.com, Jock Dempsey has a pretty good photo gallery of world anvils, http://anvilfire.com/anvils/index.php swage blocks, http://www.swageblocks.com/ cones, etc. http://www.swageblocks.com/cone_gallery.htm Here is another http://www.blackiron.us/anvil-types.html Even Postman could not list all of the known makers, resellers and marks, it would read like a phone book. There is a great photo guide to blacksmith tools with explanation here in the section strangely enough marked "Tools"
February 7, 201115 yr Author Thanks again guys. Glenn I had already gone through the 40 posts but didn't find anything on my anvils. However on one ofthe sites John posted (http://www.blackiron...nvil-types.html) I found one of mine after clicking on "Anvil Vices". In fact it is in the top row on the right hand side. It's surely worth about $25 since I paid $50 for it a few years back :rolleyes:
