John Larson
What is the typical steel found in hexagonal bars? Thanks in advance.
yesteryearforge
John It can be most any common steel type I usually specify 12L 14 leaded because of the good macninability for bolts and screws and such. Mike
ThomasPowers
*anything* from A36 to weird tool steels. Junkyard steel rules apply---TEST TEST TEST! (mine is a low Mn 1084; but was from a University Welding Eng building that was being cleaned out to be torn down; I got lots of weird stuff on that deal---polaris missle sub hull material, Ti, etc.)
Bentiron1946
I got about 5 feet free one time of 3/8" that was some kind of tool steel so I made a few sets of repousse tools out of it and sold them off. Now that was a money maker for me for a change. I think it was destined for chisels before I got my hands on it.
Nakedanvil - Grant Sarver
Hey John! Depends on what it was destined for. Lost of it made for producing hex nut, both mild and high-strength(1018, 1045, 4140). And a lot of hex is produced for paving breaker tools (1045, 15B40, 1078, 9260, 8630).
