ThomasPowers
As long as you get pure borax and not Borateem which has soap mixed in with it. Flux before your pieces get too scaled up, wirebrush and re-flux if it starts getting "crunchy" looking.
CurlyGeorge
Hounddog, that's what I use. Plain ole 20 Mule Team Borax. Works great. I have also tried the borax mixed with some clean metal shavings from my band saw. That works too. But I couldn't tell all that much difference. :)
Frank Turley
Getting two separate, scarfed pieces to lap weld can be more difficult than a fagot weld or welding a ring, for instance. For a number of years, I have been putting proprietary E-Z Weld compound on top of the borax, and it seems to help. I first put on the borax. When it glazes on the surface, it gets tacky. When the E-Z is applied, it tends to stick to the borax. http://www.turleyforge.com Granddaddy of Blacksmith Schools
