John B
Thanks to all who made the effort to come along and join us, bringing bits and books to sell. Books changed owners as did tongs, tools, a bandsaw, a bench shear, shaping machine, forge hearth and blowers. The demo's did not go quite to plan, but a lot was to be learnt from the mistakes that were made. Someone asked about making a double hook, so one was talked through to establish what was required, and then one was made, then finished it off by wire brushing, waxing with beeswax furniture polish and then applying clear lacquer. Another question raised was making tooling from Kango Bits (Jackhammer?) so one was made and fitted to a specific anvil, the hexagon looks like it was retained, but it was forged on the opposing corners first to fit the hardie hole on the anvil concerned, used the Blacker to fuller in the tool side and reduce the width for the blade, then forged and filed and wire brushed, then heat treated using ATF oil edge held up and worked well when tried. Then on the Sunday, at the request of NecroSteel, we went through the basics of forge design and how they can be constructed from a basic design principle and beyond to tailor it to the individuals specification, then fired up the small 16" square bottom blast hearth, stuck in a piece of 20mm square bar and raised it to welding heat within a few minutes Rest of the day was spent going through forging scrolling tongs from coil springs getting used to forging tool steel, again a steep learning experience. Thanks to SteveW for providing the chucks, and domestic duties. I think all who attended enjoyed the experience, and apologies for lack of pictures. Same again next year? SteveW
I just wanted to say a very quick thank you to JohnB for all the hard work he put into organising another Forge in weekend. I had my usual great time and managed to pick up some very useful tips on a wide range of subjects, met some very nice and interesting people and had my sausage nicked by a big hairy Saxon. You can defiantly count me in for next year John. A few random photographs to be going on with, sorry I am hopeless at remembering names. The Guild do two forge-ins each year Kev, but there must be others out there. Whereabouts in the country are you BTW? Oh just seen it Peterborough you could come down for the next one and camp on site for the two days.
