September 1, 201015 yr I have been playing with the running speed of my half hundred weight massey using a n invertor controler that was given to me at a recent forge in . I have never known the correct running speed for this hammer and it seems I was running it too fast . it behaves much better at 40 to 45 hertz than it does at 50........not so much power though . interestings!!!

I had a 7.5hp motor and a VFD on my 135lb Say Mak hammer when I first got it.... I ended up pulling it off and going with a 10hp with just a on off contactor and found I like it better simpler.... Not saying a VFD is a bad thing, just for me having the hammer set up to run like I want it with nothing but simple controls works better...

I ended up pulling it off and going with a 10hp with just a on off contactor and found I like it better simpler.... Not saying a VFD is a bad thing, just for me having the hammer set up to run like I want it with nothing but simple controls works better... Works great if ya have a bunch of motors and are happy with a fixed change. VFDs are the thing if ya want to go from 255 to 265 bpm or mayby 257. I think I would prefer to have an infinat control for all size stock rather than one speed fits all. Just me. Ken.
September 2, 201015 yr It's become common practice in the U.K. to use inverters to set up pumps, fans & other plant where the design, manufacturer's available & as installed flow rates tend to differ somewhat. They're used during the commissioning process to set the motor speed at the point that system balance & required flows are achieved, then left at that. Seems to me that Basher's had a brilliant idea that I wish I'd had! :D

Of course I have other hammers.. one that is single blow... So I did not ever find the need to change the BPM
September 5, 201015 yr Author the whole idea of the speed controle is that i could not find the correct running speed for the hammer and my guess of 280 BPM was making it into a not so controlable whacking machine . I have 3 working hammers one of which will happily beat the crap out of steel (150lb samuel platt) so I am aiming for controle on my air hammer . I would love a one hit hammer..............
