pkrankow
I don't see what is so odd about it. The pivot is rather low for the the mass, and there is missing hardware such as the spring and mountings. It does look a little spindly. Looks like a good serviceable vise. As for GBP to USD I am at a loss. Google says $310 USD. Phil
Sam Thompson
I've never seen a vice with the jaws extended like that, as far as I'm concerned that's odd. You're right about the price, it's ludicrous. Complete leg vices in fair condition are worth about £15-£20 ($23.78-$31.73).
ofafeather
Yeah, I think the jaw dimensions are odd. Normally you would think that jaws of that length would have much more mass to support them. If it didn't have a post I would have said that it was a vise used for saw sharpening http://www.disstonianinstitute.com/faq.html (scroll down a bit). There would be no reason I could think of for it to be a post vise though. Perhaps there was some special use. The smith would have more access to the underside of the stock than in the standar post vise configuration with a thicker neck.
infinityblacksmithing
Definately unusual with an elongated neck and jaw area. Outside of that it has alot of the features of the PW post vises I've seen, So I would guess that it is a PW.

fciron
That deep throat and wider jaws would be handy as all get out for working sheet metal. I've seen other vises with similarly elongated jaws attributed to sheet metal work.
BIGGUNDOCTOR
I would agree that it is an early sheetmetal working vise. They usually have much wider jaws, and deeper throats to hold sheetmetal items firmly.
Bentiron1946
Well everyone has beat me to the punch as to it being a sheet metal or saw sharpening vise, but I was thinking perhaps a circular saw, buzz saw, two man saw sharpening vise. Unless there is an old catalogue laying about with a description we are all just guessing.
