June 2, 201016 yr i was looking at an old dryer at work yesterday one of those big ones you could hope in and go for a ride. they where throwing it out so i went part hunting and i got some bearings out of it and i got two sprockets and the chain to go with it the smaller sprocket is about 4in in diameter and the bigger one is about 24in in diameter would love to make maybe a twister but done know if these would work i'll get some pics up today
June 2, 201016 yr I would have snagged the drum for some artsy projects. What was wrong with the dryer? I have snapped up some fairly valuable items being tossed at work, because it was "too much hassle to try and sell it".
June 2, 201016 yr Author the hole thing was shot... 22 years old and it had to go... i was thinking of grabbing the drum but they already bent it up... i didn't know if the ratio was gonna be good enough or the chain will hold up to cold twisting 1/2in box?
June 2, 201016 yr ide use it to make a tumbler ... if you dont have a tumbler that is ... gear ratio should be close enuf depends on what you use for the drum ..
June 2, 201016 yr Author well the little sprocket has 15 teeth and the bigger one has 116 on it so would that make it 7.73 to 1?
June 16, 201015 yr If the motor was good that would have been on my list of bits to get... .... as far as ratio of 15 to 117.. I have never been clear on gear ratios and whether is is diameter or circumfrence that is the important part of the equation... however a friend has a copy of the power transmission handbook that has the answer... if I can stay awake reading it long enough... it is very dry reading... it will tell you more about V belts and pulleys and belt tensions than you ever imagined existed ... what are your ideas for what to do with your booty?
June 17, 201015 yr The difference between diameter and circumference is Pi (pie? I'll take key lime). There for the ratio of diameters between two wheels would be the same as the ratio of the circumferences of those same two wheels. I don't know it the number of teeth on the cogs makes a difference or not. ron
June 17, 201015 yr Sprockets are like gears. Divide the number of teeth on the large sprocket by the number of teeth on the small sprocket. 117 divided by 15 = 7.8 to 1 Hey S_O_B I make a keeler made from scratch Key Lime pie,it's one of my favorites too.
