DennisG
I'd like to start by saying thanks to Brian B., Karen B., and all the people who took pics during their road trip. Based on the pics, I have kinda made my first "all by myself" hammer. The design is loosely based on Brians design with assistance from an article by Jeffery Funk. I have made a hammer in a course about 5 or 6 yrs ago, still a fav of mine. At the end of sat. I made the leaf, 3 1/2" long, while I waited for the hammer to cool. Sunday is when I cleaned, polished, and hardened the hammer. It is 3lb 1-1/4oz with the handle. BTW, pic 1 is supposed to be pic 4...seems laoding is being finicky today DennisG
Frosty
Nice looking hammer Dennis. Are you concerned your daughter going to claim it or are you keeping it hidden? It would be perfectly daughterly to decide it was HER hammer and there wouldn't be a thing you could do or say without being a "mean daddy." And NO, I don't think she'll go for the leaf instead. Good job. Frosty the Lucky.
Steeler
Cool hammer Dennis! What steel did you use? What kind of forge did you use and how long did the first heat take? I have a charcoal forge and wonder if I can heat steel as chunky as that. The photos speak volumes. Thanks.

DennisG
Steeler, it is 4130, same as what I made my Anvil out of. I use a coal forge, thought of gas then gave my head a shake. I love the smells of coal fires. Sure thing double edge, come on up and we can do that. My daughter and I just finished hers and need to grind and harden before I show the pics. DennisG
Been awhile since I updated this..... Last weekend my daughter and I were able to finish her hammer, face harden it and put it onto her handle. The picture shows she is a little happy with it. The last picture is of her making a leaf key chain. It was and always is a fun time spending the time with her.
chyancarrek
Good deal Dennis! Great job on the hammer and on bringing the next generation into the craft. Your daughter looks like one happy hammer-mama!
