Looking for ideas for a vetical stock storage rack. I would like it to be free standing and I have no problems lagging it to the floor. I typically buy my stock by the "stick" at a steel supplier and have to pop it in half to get it home.

Perhaps a few pieces of pipe stood on end and welded to a plate and lagged to the floor if need be. You can make the lengths of pipe whatever you want as well as pipe diameter.

Plate as base, holes in to bolt down, uprights spaced from side to side at front and back, at suitable pitches and height to accomodate the sizes and overall length of materials to be stored,

These uprights to be connected from front to back to look similar to a vertical ladder with very wide spacing between the rungs. This is mainly for safety to stop the ends poking you.

Put a crossmember across the full width about two to three feet high and stepped back from the front, so that shorter, part used lengths can be placed in this section and not get lost in amongst the longer ones,

And if this is to be free standing, I would consider putting a bar or chain along the front towards the top to stop bars coming forward onto you.


I would not recommend tube as bits get "Lost" in the bottom of them, and you cannot see the stock or other debris that may lodge in there.

I have several 5 gallon buckets that I use to hold my stock according to shape/size. In general the stock is about 8-10 feet tall, it's not a perfect system but it does work pretty well.
