pkrankow
I've seen videos of this being used on underwater conduits, something like 3 feet in diameter. It's a neat process. Phil
pkrankow
YouTube - Pipe - Friction Stir Welding here's a "small" pipe about 8 inches diameter on steel. I know there are some videos of other metals out there, including certain dissimilar metals. Aluminum and steel I think. Phil
divermike
I was told if you took 2 super clean, highly polished pieces of steel and layed on on the other, they would weld themselves together by joining at the molecular level, all by them selves. piglet_74
That's really interesting. I guess you need to be able to run off onto something at the end of the weld. At first I thought they were welding in a pipe hanger on the fly or something. Edited October 30, 2009 by piglet_74
pkrankow
yep, it pulls a plug out making a hole if it stops in the middle. If you Google stir welding you can find enough videos and articles to waste a whole day easily. Phil
