October 1, 200916 yr Hi i havent really posted anything yet but i thought you guys might help me find out what type of anvil this is. It's was my great grand-father's anvil. We think it's a french type anvil but we don't really know. We don't know the age either ; any idea? it would be greatly appreciated if you could help us! Ps keep up the good threads.:)
October 1, 200916 yr Looks French to me too. I believe the word is 'enclume' if you would like to do some further research.
October 1, 200916 yr Heck yeah; if you Google Image "enclume" you get a picture nearly identical to that. I suspect that you may need to speak a little French (or get some help from someone who does) in order to get very far with this inquiry.

October 2, 200916 yr My Great Grandfather brought one like that over from Ireland in 1915. He didn't use it in his shop though. It stayed in the barn where we dressed hogs and cured meat. It stayed on top of a box that he kept the salt in to keep the critters out.
October 3, 200916 yr i have an 80 pound anvil with the same logo on it and i told it is and armstrong anvil
October 3, 200916 yr Heck yeah; if you Google Image "enclume" you get a picture nearly identical to that. .... I agree, it looks like this one as far as I can see. :D
October 4, 200916 yr That looks a lot like the anvil that Mr. Postman refers to as a armorer's anvil on page 28 of Anvils In America.
