jokerman Posted August 19, 2009 Share Posted August 19, 2009 Hi from Elgin, Illinois. I've been collecting blacksmithing tools for over twenty years now and have a nice collection. I want to get started setting up a small place to do some forging and this web site seems a fantastic resource. More immediate question ... have a Canedy Otto Western Chief blower. What's the best way to seal the gearcase and what's the best weight gear lube to use. Thanks and I know I'll be back to this site many times to ask and learn. ThomasPowers Posted August 19, 2009 Share Posted August 19, 2009 My suggestion for getting started is to: Find your local ABANA Affiliate and start attending meetings! Blowers were not sealed and work more with "flow through" oiling, much better when we all had dirt floors. Usually you just give them a squirt or two of oil when you use them (and have a pan of cat litter under them) Don't use too heavy an oil as that will make cranking difficult. It was meant to be used and the pleasure and satisfaction found using it is indescribable. Blowers sling oil around the gears, more than a squirt or two will just drip out. It's how they were made. 30w is about right in warm weather, ATF is good if winters are cold. If you'll click "User CP" at the top of the page and edit your profile to show your location it can make a big difference. I thought I had to fill the gearcase with oil (say 4 - 8 ounces or so). If it only needs just a little oil as you mention what's the purpose of the open/close valve at the bottom of the blower? Finnr Posted August 19, 2009 Share Posted August 19, 2009 Both my Canedy Otto blowers have a plug with "Fill To " or something like cast intothe housing next to it.
