With the help of you guys I have come to believe this is a 1855 William Foster anvil weighing in at 2 stones and 13 pounds..... or 237, in very nice condition. It has a terrific ring across the face with the exception of the corner near the square hole. The square hole has nice edges, the top is smooth and there are no chips or breakages. Of course there are markings along the sides, and what appear as a slightly blunted horn tip. As I am new to this forum, I have asked, and continue to ask what is a reasonable price to expect for this anvil. ($2-$3 per pound seems to be reasonable less any historic or unique personality). I am working on getting pictures posted. I welcome all feedback and any possible interests. Located 100 miles north of Chicago. Thomas Dean Posted August 2, 2009 Share Posted August 2, 2009 Not to be too picky.... but 2stones = 28lbs... 8 stones = 112Lbs which is the English CWT. You are correct in the total weight being 237lbs. Your anvil sounds like it is in decent shape but pictures would be nice. My personal opinion is that the $3 p/lb is high. But if you can get it good for you! Prices of anvils are vary greatly from each area. I'm sure if you were selling this anvil in say NM or AZ then you could probably see that 3 buck a lb. I meant to use the proper English CWT and have seen the term hundredth weights used (112#) and quarter hundredth weight. Regarding the pricing, last April a senior member offered the following as a guideline for an english Foster anvil-- "Prices in good using condition: $1 bragging/steal; $2 decent; $3 topping out; $3+ you should have let it go!" I was hoping I could contribution to your community of blacksmithing artists with the availability of some historically important tools. Due to a death in my family our small fabrication shop is being cleared. Some of the gems I have managed to save from the scrap yard hype include the anvil and some sheet metal stakes and plates, rollers, edgers and seamers (et al). It was my perception you folks got as excited about these things as I did. I believe that we all can see that they have value and utility, and can be rather hard to find when you want them. Mr Thomas, if you feel differently about my coming to your forum as I only "just want to sell some stuff" I do apologize as that was not my intent. I would have used ebay, but I am not convinced I would have found people as well informed as I can here. GMann, I did not say that you "....just want to sell some stuff...." I think ya got the wrong guy;) I just suggested that you post this in the "Tailgating" section. My opinion still stands on the price tho. but that is for my area, and my opinion... I know they can, and sometimes do, go for more.
