I Forge Iron

what size gas forge if you don't want welding heat?

Recommended Posts

I am going to build a couple of forges with interchangeable burners. I have 3/4" burners. I know you need 250 to 300 cu" for to get to forge welding temp. So I can build a small one with one burner for that. How many cubic inches would you need if you just want forge heat? I would build a bigger one just for that. thanks for any advice on this. kevin

A couple things. First you can just turn the pressure down if you don't heed welding heat.

Second a well tuned 3/4" burner should bring up to 350cu/in to welding heat but that's at the upper limit.

So, the short answer would be 350-400 cu/in volume and you will still get high orange low yellow but not likely to welding heat.

The inside of a forge is always smaller than it seems and the outside seems disproportionally large.

700 cu/in may be too much volume to get much into orange heat, even insulated. A door will make a big difference of course but that still seems awfully large.

Then again it's easier to add another or a larger burner than it is to enlarge the forge itself. I always try to design so adjustments take the easy route.
