And welcome Bert. I spent 17 years as a union Ironworker in Los Angeles. Good to see you're moving into forging!

I can have a ton delivered to me in 50 pound sacks (40) for around $800.

Nice looking forge.

Nice video John. I love how quiet the iron kiss is when not being used. The self contained hammers can get annoying in the shop all day.

We could always go in on a shipment from L-brand. I too have been searching here in Utah. We can have a ton delivered to my shop and split it? It is coal coke, I got a quote a while back for a ton. I think it was $850 delivered for the ton. 40 bags, 50lbs each.

Take a look at Bruce Bumps tutorials on the knife dogs forum. He "pollutes" his pattern welding with tack welds and is a master bladesmith. His Damascus blades are some of the finest around.

There is a ton of great stuff on pattern welding throughout this sight. Try to start with keeping it simple, some old bandsaw blades alternated with 1080 steel in a stack. Tack welded together so they can't move while forge welding. Remember that smooth scale free surfaces weld together much easier.

happy belated birthday my friend! you are an inspiration!

the lp190 burner is priced reasonably at $145! this would be a great brick pile forge burner. i am leaning towards making a castable forge similar to this with adjustable height, like the mankels and using the lp190 ribbon burner. anyone have a blown mankel and have info on fuel consumption?

Beautiful sculpture Mac! I'm sure with all the horse folk around here there will be similar requests in my future!

Amazing work! For the square stock ripped on the diamond, did you use a vertical bandsaw? Seems like a tedious process. For the tenons do you use a power hammer jig?

Nice looking patterns. What are you planning for the handles?

Nice work! I like the joinery pic, they have some meat to them.

Congratulations! She's a bigun! I went from a 148 lb hay budden to a 460lb rathole, what a difference!

I wouldn't make a first attempt at pattern welding using unknown steels. You need contrasting steels to make the pattern. 15n20 is a great high nickel steel which heat treats and contrasts well with 1080 high carbon steel. . The 1080 etches dark, the 15n20 etched silvery. Hope this helps

Good call on Burt Reynolds Macbruce! That's what came to mind when I saw this thread.

I like it, looks like it would be good for Damascus.

I missed these posts. Things got busy with getting the family moved, getting my business license and all the stuff that goes along with setting up a business. I'll keep checking back for news on the bonneville forge council, i'd love to meet some new people!

Nice job on the stands! I made one for my fontanini 460lb, i used one inch laser cut plate with thick wall square tube legs. I set the anvil on the stand and it had a ring that would deafen you! I used a whole tube of silicon under the anvil, and she is super quiet now!

My advice would be to purchase the nicest belt grinder you can afford, or you could buy the no weld grinder plans and build one yourself.

As usual, simply stunning! Good job Michael!

I am installing a French quarter gas lamp with post and a forged sign hanger for a client. Anyone have any recommendations for a type of fastener that works well with slate rock flooring?
