  1. You could just skip the electricity and make it a manual set up with some old bike parts use the crank and pedals to turn the back wheel on the smallest gear attached to the blower.... presto working blower
  2. There's a forge exactly like that at the forge for my local blacksmiths club its not a bellows forge the big fly wheel on the gears has a belt around it attached to a blower i dont know if thats the way it was originaly done or not as far as gettign it unstuck i say stick with the spray and take a wire wheel or brush to it as well to knock off some of the crud
  3. hey tim what did you use as your refractory? very nice btw cant wait to see it in action
  4. yeah i need to get out and go to some scrap yards and ask around ive never heard of quad state what is it?
  5. thanks alot for all the help guys i hadnt heard about the bondo before and railroad rail or another large chunck of steel are really my only current options for an anvil as i dont have the money for an anvil from harbour freight which i have heard if you get the ones made in russia they are cast steel instead of cast iron which makes it better right?
  6. thanks for the suggestion luckily theres a trian yard not to far from were i live next to the grain drop station anywho i know about the ring i figured id wrap some chain around it and get it bolted nice and solid to a stump. im not entirely sure there are any scrap yards around i havent been able to find them because our city has a large drop point for omni source and i dont know that they will sell the metal they collect
  7. Anyone know were i can get short lengths of railroad rail around fortwayne indiana i see big long pieces along the tracks all the time but i have no way of cutting them any help?
  8. yeah im not real good at identifyin clay in the area were i live i think im gonna end up using furnace cement for my refractory any sugestions on how thick? ill probably do at least a couple inches on the bottem to shallow up my forge a little as of right now as just a grill shell id estimate it to be about 7 inches deep at least
  9. yeah they just lowered the price on a 14" charcoal grill to $10 were i work so i figured just buy one of those and convert it suggestions for lining air etc?
  10. both methods can be used the grinding a blade shap from stock method requires less skill than forging a blade with that method though all your blade strength comes from the original stock with forging you can fold and forge weld it into many layers making a stronger blade the grinding is also cheaper because it does not require a forge or anvil or any of the other big heavy equiptment requried to forge a blade but choice is entirely yours
  11. Any body ever thought about trying this for a fuel such as charcoal? i was at wally world the other day wondering around the garden section when i noticed how fairly inexpensive these pots were. if i could find one the proper diameter that wasnt to deep i was thinking enlarge the drainage hole and use that for the blast hole line it with refractory and away we go only thing i dont know is if the pot would crack a forging temp even if it were lined any ideas?
  12. hi guys i've been interested in blacksmithing for a while and i want to get started just need to get stuff together i plan on building a small charcoal forge make an anvil out of a nice chink of steel in a bucket any suggestions for a good fairly cheap way to build a good charcoal forge it would be greatly appriciated!
