  1. Thank you for sharing your opinions guys, I also thaught it was highly priced but it's the first one I've seen for sale around here so I thaught I'd ask around. I'll probably make an offer (I) can't refuse and see where it takes me. Thanks again for all replies ! Naz.
  2. Hello everyone, I saw this treadle hammer for sale near where I live and it got me thinking I could use one of those (now and then). Problem is I'm not sure what a fair price is for one. There are a few pics and description, could some of you more experienced fellow blacksmiths give me your opinion on this one ? Thanks ! 3. I use these modified pliers, I cut the bottom jaw and welded a hardie shank. Simple and easy to make, they work out pretty good on small stock. I never used them on anything larger than 1/2" but I would be limited on stock size, the jaw size having it's limit. (Still trying to figure how to get normal size pictures.) Naz.
  4. I think this is the iron city punch you guys are talking about. Hard to say on the vise since it's only half-punched but it's clearer on the hammer. Naz.
  5. Uh ! You did what on who now ?!? I think I just realized where the real problem is , 6" behind my keyboard ! I'll get my tender half to read your posts and figure this one out. She's the whiz around here. Thanks a lot guys ! Naz.

    My Smithy

Looks great ! I share that "it's not much but it's mine " attitude ! Keep at it and have fun ! Naz.
  7. Could someone tell me how to get my forum pictures to be a normal size. I see others are having the same problem. Thanks ! Naz.
  8. Here's mine. I took some ideas i saw here and there , bunched them all up and came up with this set up. My main goal was to minimize the ring to spare the neighbor's ears. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. It works out great for me. Any questions, comments or advice are welcome. Naz.
  9. That's a good example of the difference between used and abused. Hey, that's not far from where I live, maybe i'll go check it out and "accidently" drop it on his toe. (Just kidding!)
  10. My recipe is 1/3 Beeswax, 1/3 boiled linseed oil (can be baught at hardware store), and 1/3 white spirit (or turpentine). I'm not sure what the boiled linseed oil does or doesn't do but I'm quite satisfied with the results. I also apply when the metal is hot to the touch but not too hot as this burns the finish leaving it sticky and brown. This is good for inside only. Good luck ! Naz
  11. Thanks for all your replies. I do prefer the handmade ones but after a quick google search, I didn't find any broom makers in my region (Montreal, Canada). All other ideas are good options too. Thanks again ! Naz.
  12. Hi everyone ! Just wondering what some of you are using to make brooms in your fireplace sets. I've heard of broom corn but i imagine there must be a technique to tying it to the handle. Are there any other options ? Thanks ! Naz.
  13. Right you are, that's what I'll be using from now on also , Thanks! Naz

    tong ID ?

That makes a lot of sense Phil, Thanks ! Naz.
  15. Here are a few tips(arangements) I like in my shop(garage).Simple but useful, the way I like'em. Some I've seen somewhere, some were thaught up while waiting for that cold, thick piece of metal to get yellow. If you have any that you find useful, please post them,I'm always on the lookout to make my life a little easier. 1-Rope tied up on each end of the screw handle. Eliminates that heavy noise when you drop the screw handle. 2-I put my propane forge on my coal forge table. The height is perfect, I have space to put some tools, etc... I still use the coal forge for demos or occasional forge welds at home but having close neighbors I try to spare them from the smoke and smell.(Can't understand why they wouldn't like it but I'm just playing safe). 3-Door(plate) I can put to keep more heat in the forge when the metal doesn't need to go through the other entrance. (I should weld one with pivots). 4-I use a small wood barrel as a tong rest. 5-The "grab and grind" support, I really like this one, the grinders stay pluged in the wall outlet and the vise is near by. I clamp whatever needs grinding , cutting ,cleaning or whatever in the vise, grab the grinder and go. I usually have three but blew the motor off one last week. This one(support) is a chromed piece of flat stock I had that was already bent but you get the idea. 6&7-Adjutable vise forks.(I used heavy angle iron with 3/4" round stock).

    tong ID ?

I got these along with a bunch of other good looking tongs, all company punched "ATHA" and "CHAMPION" exept for these heavy jaw-ed no name never seen anything like it before tongs. The jaws are 1 1/8" square.Has any one out there ever seen a pair similar to these and do you know what they are(were) used for ? I ended up thinking they were blanks for the user to modify. Thanks for any information ! Naz.
  17. Yes , I've seen her site before, that's awsome work (imagine the hours). Thanks ! Naz.

    Dragon heads step by step

Absolutely ! Just make sure to pass it on to someone else after. The time we save by helping each other can be used to advance in other techniques and ideas. Too many good smiths died with their secrets. Tip : Use modeling clay to practice, the cheapest you can find. Clay moves in the same way hot metal does. Form the clay in a square(or round) section of the same size metal you plan on using. Then use the hammer, anvil, punches, etc... (When working hot metal, place the bar stock in the vise and punch the eyes, nostrils, etc... in the same order as in the photo.). When practicing with clay, use the hammer and anvil to form the head, then use your hand as a vise and just push the punches into the head. Good luck ! Naz.

    Dragon heads step by step

Hi Hogan ! Thanks for the interest ! I use 1/2" stock but I guess any size would do depending on the size of punches you use. I made three punches to do the dragon heads : (eye punch, nostril punch, mouth and ear/horns punch, witch is really a hand held hot cut.) The rest is made with the hammer. I tried to add a photo of my punches with this reply but don't know how. Take care ! Naz.
  20. Thanks guys, I will be coming back to this unfinished project soon with a lot more ideas and options now.
  21. HI, just wondering if square tubing can be twisted in the same way a square bar can. This may sound elementary but i never had the oppotunity to try, I'm in the middle of making a coat rack (on legs)and i'd like the middle post to be at least 1" square stock. The legs are already quite heavy so tubing seemed like an option, a little easier on the wallet also. Thanks !! Naz.
