    Trout knife

Thanks for the comments. just finished grinding another 5 blades to do another 5 to the same design. Regards DANIEL TASMANIA.
  2. HI , here is a folder i made up ATS34 blade ,ti liners ,including a spoon ,which is an extension of the ti liner.Used for cleaning out the blood on the backbone in a trout. Merry Christmas DANIEL TASMANIA.
  3. HI NEAL. i had some reservations about the clearance you mention. To make sure the die holder cleared the slides i ran it without the die attached to make sure i had clearance when the die was attached. A bit of trial error but the whole machine was trial and error. I just about gave up trying to stop it walking about the floor, even with the base plate .400lb and the anvil 500 lb however i did get it running real sweet in the end. the thing hammers real good.
  4. HI . here is a pic of my tire hammer in action. DANIEL TASMANIA.
  5. HI , I should have added that i have a gap of half an inch between the dies at rest. i machined up the the dies from an old truck axle .No idea what the steel was but i heat treated it and it shows no sign of deterioration after a lot of hammering. Merry Christmas. DANIEL TASMANIA.
  6. HI GEORGE, may be a bit late however i made mine with a two and a half inch offset for a 5 inch travel.i get a bit more travel when the springs load up. regards Daniel TASMANIA.
  7. HI, i welded a piece of 1/8 plate to the inside rim.to make a small internal quadrant oposite the crank throw , i then kept topping up the formed recess with lead till it stopped walking about. a bit of Heath Robinson method but after all i am Scottish. used the hammer through the week to make up some damascus. After the hammering i put the billet through the rolling mill and it turned out great. I think the hammer is well worth building. Daniel TASMANIA.
  8. DANIEL HERE AGAIN. should have mentioned that i had a lot of mucking about to stoping tire hammer walking about the floor.even with the base and anvil weighing 900lb . the weight of lead on the tire rim ended up 11.5 lbs to stop it walking.hope this may help builders DANIEL TASMANIA.
  9. HI RE the drive hub. i used a piece of alu billet 3 inch dia.i think i will wear out before the hub.knurling the hub is not necessary. REGARDS TO ALL DANIEL TASMANIA.
  10. HI Guys, thought you might like to see a pic of my tire Hammer in action,i am very impressed with the performance. DANIEL TASMANIA.
  11. Here is my forge ,yet to be installed.going to use coke.cant show the home made blower as it is up at the shack. aluminium hood .the 6 inch flue might be a bit small. will line with fire brick when in place. DANIEL TASMANIA.
  12. hi guys , talked to my scrimshaw man . why not red ink {could he tell the diference} mix a small amount of blood with the ink. incuded some of my liner locks with scrim shaw of tas annimals plus a kiwi bird. he recons blood and ink would be ok. Daniel TASMANIA.
  13. Thanks for the kind remarks . will give it a go as is to try it out. have put a bit of the six by four on an one inch thick steel plate for a vertical one as well. will also heat up a bit and try to quench it to see if it hardens. Thanks again . may have a go at hard facing later DANIEL TASMANIA.
  14. Thanks for the remarks. cant show any other pic as i dismantled it this morning. i have no room left in the workshop so i built a new shed up at my fishing shack in the highlands. will try to make a bit of damascus when the fish are not bitting. can take few mone pic from all angles if you wait a week ????/ Thanks DANIEL TASMANIA.
  15. SAFETY, Yes it will have a safety plate and spring shroud before it goes into operation. Thanks Daniel.
  16. Thanks for the info.talked to refactory guy about the material you mentioned,he has never heard of the stuff. this is understandable as TASMANIA is a bit in the backwoods so to speak. however the fly fishing here is great so i guess you cant have it all . one thing about the great USA is the availability of things ,i import all my knife making gear from the states . regards DANIEL TASMANIA.
  17. HI GUYS. Here is i a photo of the tire hammer i finished today. runs real sweet,45lb hammer 200 bangs per min.had to add 13.4lb to the rim of the wheel to stop it wandering about the floor. I made the dies out of a truck axle {heat treated } 2hp motor. DANIEL TASMANIA.
  18. Hi guys . thought i would post a pic of a sort of anvil i made up{till i get a real one} the things weight is 160 lb . i used 6x4 solid bar {mild steel} i managed to scrounge 20 feet of the bar. moving it had its problems also cutting. the tire hammer i have just finished has the same bar for the anvil. would it be worth hard facing the thing. DANIEL TASMANIA.
  19. Thanks for the replys. will enter the black hole. been to the refactory people this morning. the new furnace will have a 2000 deg c castable hot wall 100mm with 80 mm insulating castable arround that, then 50 mm high temp kao wool enclosed in a steel box. the castable has to be cured in an oven . will post a pic when finished.... Thanks again for all the replys . i should add that i can get it built for zero dollars as i do a bit of turning work for the refactory people when needed . Daniel TASMANIA.
  20. HI GUYS , thanks for the replys.looks like i might make up another forge lined with castable for welding and use the relined one for forging. good idea yes no ???? Regards Daniel.
  21. I miss led with the pics . the pics were when i built the furnace. the kao wool lining had a high zircon wash several times. I use the same wash in an other furnace that i use for melting cast iron .That furnace is still going strong after 150 melts.the iron is melted in a cruisible the failed furnace had a high temp ceramic tile to rest the job on. {the flux ate half of that also] ]. i guess what i need is a method of stopping to flux getting to the to the kao wool .a blow by blow decription of the proper method of lining the furnace by one who knows would be great. cant show any photos of the lining as i stripped it out. if the furnace is lined correctly what sort of life can i expect thanks for the help . Daniel TASMANIA.
  22. i ment to include a couple of pics of the forge i had problems with.
  23. HI. got a bit of a problem with the gas forge. having used the forge a dozen times the anhydrous borax flux has got into the k wool lining and stuffed it up. i used a high zircon wash over the wool and the flux ate through it. how shoud i go about relining the thing . glad of any help. Daniel Tasmania. AUSTRALIA.
  24. Thanks for the replies. i will go for the 2 inch and make up some packers.the adjustable throw seems a good idea. I have a 5 inch throw which seems to hit pretty hard.i think if i built one again i would buy the Spencer plans . I managed to get a lot of things wrong . however it works . only have the anvil fitted today . thanks again. for the replys.DANIEL TASMANIA AUSTRALIA. will post a pic when i get it finished.
  25. HI , got a question for the experts in this field,i have just built a tire hammer and about to fit the anvil dies. the question is what sort of clearance do i need between the dies . i supose it depends on the material i am going to hammer ????? . any help will be appreciated. DANIEL . Tasmania. AUSTRALIA.
