  1. Thats really cool. The only problem with that is that i live in the country by a highway and i cant really ask around with like people that like near me cuz we are like 5 miles from and so u cant really walk anywhere and my farm and i only go into town for certain things throughout the week and we don't stay in town for any more rime that we need to. And the only neighbors we have are our grandparents, who i actually got my first anvil from, and some friends from church who's dad is actually a blacksmith too. So i always look at our local youth ranch and at garage sales but that is all i'm limiting to. But thanks for the advise when it comes to asking people at church. I might go ahead and do that, i mean i know that some of the older guys there used to to some blacksmithing when they were younger so they might have something lying around.
  2. Well i currently dont have a broken gas grill or a non blocken one that i can bolt a forge to. But i do have an old char coal bbq that i tried to turn to a charcoal forge and failed. Do u think that would work if i just bolted the forge insidd of it and ran the propane hose through the hole in it and set the tank on the little shelf sorta rhing an alot of bbqs? I dint have a picture and im currently working on school (im homeschooled) and visiting this website every one in a while (don't worry I'm allowed to) so i cant go outside and get one
  3. Totally forgot to respond to this part pnut but the short sword is actually the only knife ive ever made with a draped handle, and that was because the customer specifically asked for it based of a picture his wife made. The kriss dagger has a stacked leather handle and all the othe knife pictures ive uploaded have wood handles.
  4. Thats real cool. Ill have to see if i can find a way to do that.
  5. Ya i might be able to convince my dad to let me use it in the garage but i think im just gonna make a little roof and set it up under that. And Take it down when its to rainy, cold, snowy. Thats the nice think about this forge. It has a handle and is pretty light, granted its also pretty small. But it should defiantly work for what i intend to use it for.
  6. Dont worry pnut i made sure it was rigidized. Its literally the cheapest forge on amazon and will prob not get up to forge welding heat but it has good reviews and i have confidence if will at least alow md to do some forging while its raining/freezing cold out side. Because until now ive heen forging in a homade charcoal forge that i made from a cast iron sink, gravle and sand. And i use my shop vac as a forge blower.
  7. Well i don't know if this is totally accurate but i once heard that propane forges can slowly draw carbon out of high carbon steel. Whild coal, coke, and wood forges can slowly increase the carbon content. Don't take my word for it though, like i said im not totally sure.
  8. I started work on a knife for my cousin. All i did was cut a leaf spring down to size and did a little stock removal with my angle grinder. The rest will have two wait till Friday wjen my new propane forge will be here. Not really interesting but thought i might participate.
  9. I use ear protection and safety glasses wild forging as well as a mask wile grinding.
  10. That is what i did for the above mentioned knives that ive already sold. I found a handmaid fnife of about the same size and subtracted some from it because of the lesser quality of my work. That brought me to $80.
  11. Ok well i have an angle grinder and i can cut metal pretty fast with that thing. Thanks for the advice again!
  12. Hi guys i need prayers for a girl at our church that has type two diabetes. Her health is kinda random and ome day she feals totally fine then the next she's in the hospital barely dodging death. I would seriously appreciate it if shd was prayed for. I believe that she can live a full life with the help of God and when two or more are gathered in prayer He is there.
  13. Tanks for all the advise ThomasPowers! This will definitely be helpful! I just orderd my first propane forge and it will be here by Friday so that should make it easier to get a consistent heat on the entirety of the blade. Also i don't currently have any coil springs and i could get one or two sooner or later but o was wondering if I could use leaf spring for the same thing. I mean i wont be able to do the whole cutting along the diameter and drawing out and stuff but this is the same alloy that i plan to use for alot of my knives and i can still do the heat treatment/quenching, normalizing, non-magnetic, etc.
  14. ya i have made one that i intended to keep but it ended up breaking. i didnt no what normalizing steel was at that time though and the hrain size was much to large for a knife. it was made of a lawn mower blade but i dont know exactly what the carbon content was. but was most likly 1050 carbon steel like most lanmower blades. i amaplaning on using peices of a large leaf spring i got from a fellow smith for further knife making. i also dont know what the exact carboj content is. do u know how i can find out? i mean i know its high carbon spring steel but if i was teying to sell online or somthing i might want to market it as a certan type of steel.
  15. oh sorry i didnt even think abaut the fact that alot of u guus are pronably in other countreis! im in the USA so i would likd the answear in US dollers buf if u give an answear in another curency i could just run it through google anyway and find out what its worth. about the tests i usualy chop a litfle wood with a knives i make and do sharpness tests like paper cut tests. also the reply to pnut i usuly put myself at $7.50 an hour since thats Idaho's minimum wage.
  16. thanks JHCC! that is a very hepful page that i will ne using!
  17. thanks for your concern Glenn but im in Idaho, knives are my states favorite. There realy arnt any laws on selling kives other than that it is totally legal for anyone over the ahe of 12 to buy any knife and u can have any knife over 4" blade length open carry and its totally legal (unless ur on scool ground of course). Again thanks for your concern and for all of u guys' help. i do have another queston though. if i was able to get my knives ro a broader auddiance of buyers, how muck would i want to sell for?
