  1. worse. got it. hard to imagine it being worse to be honest. but ill follow your advice. but allow me to add another question. where am i gunna find basicly a big brick of steel?
  2. how thick do i need? im planing on putting a 1/4 in steel plate ontop of my current aso to help aleviate the problems. think itll help or should i just leave it be?
  3. i have the harbor freight 55 pound anvil shaped object right now. i used it once so far (only just got the forge running today) and i can already tell its junk. i knew it was junk when i bought it but i thought it would work ok till i could find a real anvil. now im thinking i need to find one sooner rather then later. right now i have a prospect in my view. Ebay link removed per TOS its a 20 pound steel anvil but the 55 pounder jumps around on my (note to self find proper stand) so basically what im asking is is 20 pounds to light? ill mostly be working steel and would love a nice 300 pound behemoth but its probably best that i actually know what im doing before i start looking into dropping some serious cash on a anvil. budget is a big thing right now hope im posting this question in the right area, im still learning my way around the fourm
  4. so im happy. found a nicholson file in my driveway. one of the nice big ones in great shape too. just a little surface rust but noting a wire brush cant take care of
  5. just some cheap insta light. smells like they were soaked in lighter fluid. it got the coal started is all that matters tho all I did today was try to make a 6 inch 1/4 inch thick peice of steel a thinner peice of longer steel
  6. well the forge is working. got some cheap charcoal from walmart to start the thing. got some metal in it now. I'm kinda just beating on it to see what happens really
  7. eventually id like to go gas. but this was the easiest way to get started. and i have alot to learn about forge design and operation before i attempt to build a gas forge. so hopefully by the time id like a table to have extra fuel ready to go into the fire ill be ready to build a nice gas forge
  8. yea I can see that. when I bought the box 6 years ago I didn't thing I'd ever be turning it into a forge and anvil stand. hope the bottom box holds up. can't find any stumps tall enough. plus I like the idea of this all being able to be easily moved around. the box was just some 100$ El chepo starter tool box I bought when I was first starting out as a mechanic. (I've worn many hats)
  9. I'll give it a shot. not gunna get a fire going today. if this was a couple hours ago I'd give it a go but it's to late in the day now. but the forge is done. only took trying to put a round peg in a square hole every step of the way but it's done.
  10. got the very last bag of coal that my tractor supply had. and it was ripped so she gave it to me half of. one of the stores around here has 27 pallets of the rice coal and 18 of the nut O.o
  11. that is my favorite random fear. great at party's. "so no matter where you are, you feel like your being watched? by a duck?" "yes. and it petrifies me." "quack" "AHHHHHHH" runs away screaming
  12. way before my time haha
  13. I didn't even know where was a sharp pointy things phobia. earn somethin new every day
  14. I know right? elements, I'll give it a shot when I go to light my first fire. hopefully should be up and running by the end of tuesday
  15. ment 40 pounds. Won't let me edit it anymore. guesse to much time has passed or somethin
  16. I haven't bought it yet and your correct. the shipping was more then the coal found a thread talkin bout tractor supply coal. and they seem to like it from what I've gathered. 6 or 7 bucks for 49 pounds? yes please. I'll be picking up a few bags Tuesday most likely. still gotta work ok the air pipeing. sense I changed the fuel from charcoal to coal the pipe I made isn't gunna work. leaky is an understatement. so I'm gunna use exhuast pipe. I'll weld a straight pipe to a y pipe. one side air other side ash dump. it'll be better this way and I'll put some mesh or a grate ontop of it to keep everything but ash in the rotor. the people that were talkin bout the coal I'm gunna use were kinda spit between rice size and nut size so I'll probably get a bag of each and see what I prefer. for starting it I plan to use my map gas torch. that thing is a life saver sometimes.
  17. so I did some more reading and googling. coal seems like the better choice for what I'm building. and the charcoal I found for before was 15 bucks for a 10 pound bag and i found coal for 25 bucks for 50 pounds. so all around better choice from what I see. anyone else confirm this? this is where I found the coal btw link removed I can't rember, who said coal was the better choice? yea you told me so...
  18. ahh pittsburg. went by there all the time when I was runnin reefer. (that's a type of truck get your minds out the baggie) so I imagine becuase your makin stuff for a fair you do this professionally?
  19. what side of pa are you on? I lived on the east side for 5 years and near philly for 2ish. my grandma is still there a fair sounds fun atleast
  20. I'm really looking foward to it. can't wait to light a fire in the forge I'm building. didn't get much done to it today becuase weather made it unbearable in my shop
  21. never saw that movie. im used to wall hangers and trainer swords. only used a real use katana once (cutting those straw mats) altho i found this really funny, was playing dragon age inquision (still playing it but still) the blacksmiths were holding fully finished swords about 4 feet over and anvil and just hitting it with a hammer haha. i know video game still made me laugh for a solid 10 min
  22. that helps emensly thanks for the tip
  23. yea I read that. I'm coming from a very quote heavy fourm so it's a habit I gotta kick
