  1. The blower seems to be in pretty good condition, I think I will do as you guys suggest and pack it with clay/sand and see how it goes. I love giving older stuff a chance but I really would like to get away from my propane forge and start learning solid fuel coal and charcoal forging.
  2. Thanks for the advice. I will drill it down by the bowl where the crack seems to stop. I will give it some TLC and hopefully get it up and running. I will research and make a decision on how to 'clay' it as I do not want to damage it further. Looking forward to the project.
  3. Good morning monks of the coal forge , I have rescued a coal forge, which I am very excited about, and was getting it cleaned up and about to start fabricating a new Tuyere. However, there is a stress crack off the firpot (see pics) and someone has repaired it with what looks like JB Weld or something. I know I need to mud the main basin, but is this usable with the current crack?
  4. So just an update: I heard from the picker where I purchased this vise and he had picked up a few more vises. I bought one that is complete, spring, mount etc. for the same money. Anyway, I have it at home and now I just need to build a stand for it. I worked up a 36" stump for it but even after squaring it off the thing is just too wobbly so I will have to think it through this weekend. So now to explain to the wife why i have three pole vises? a small 4" one I got when I first got into smithing and the two newer ones. I will post a picture when I get back out to the shop tomorrow.
  5. I have about 3" of throw. it is a large vise. i have a smaller 4" underneath (that is the screw under it in the pic). I plan to go ahead and set it up. I think your right, most of what I do will likely only involve the first bit anyway. But, I guess I am still in the market for another vise
  6. Met a guy at the flea market. Maybe got to excited because it was only $75. I can make a mount and a spring but it seemed intact. I get it home and notice a rattle when I remove the screw. It seems several inches of the screw are snapped off and floating in it. I'm not sure how useful it will be. Kinda down actually. Surprising how things like this can kick yeah when you don't see it coming
  7. Frosty, that is so true, I am so new to blacksmithing that I havent even set up things fully. I am reading this forum to get ideas on how to restore a pole vise I was given. the donor also threw in a few leaf springs, another friend brought me a box of steel (railroad spikes, and random steel). so the pile is growing . . . I have made a dozen leafs and hooks, but I am at the point I need to setup the vise. so thanks to Grumpy Biker and you guys for posting. I already have the steel (some mild steel I purchased) and will forge it into a mount soon.
  8. I did take a wire wheel to it but I have not ground on it or try to clean it up. It rings nice and has far more bounce than the rail road steel I first struck. After just a few projects, and still trying to master tapers and leaves, i have fallen in love with it. Man what I wouldn't give to know where this thing has been and how it came to be. By the end of the summer it will have its own place and I look forward to many many projects together.
  9. I guess I was concerned due to the rough texture and the lack of markings. I didn't want to say it was a Hay-Budden if it was not.
  10. I apologize, I could not figure out how to edit the original post. I thank you guys for your time. Here are a few pictures I took this evening:
  11. Ill be honest guys, I am not sure if I should have clicked into the HB review thread or started a new one. So I started a new because I am not sure I have a HB anvil, and fear I may have been played. I am not worried about the money but would like to know if it is what I hope it is I do apologize that my first post is to pester you with a question. Every picture I find of a HB I can identify at least some part of the logo stamp or some other number, but on mine, nothing. No logo, no serial #, nothin. I am beginning to fear it is not a HB and I bought something else, from one read on 'identifying your anvil' the author made a statement that sometimes anvils were 'unfinished' and sold as is for cheap. So anyway, here is what I have: a 300lb. "Hay Budden" but I am greatly concerned by the texture on the side and lack of any markings that i can find. The bottom (I forgot to take a picture) is flat with a square hole in the center. I can see the top plate seem, and maybe another between the top half and the bottom half at the waste. <iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fZduigpqipXbZo5WgWmQOloeTum-YDqXWA/preview" width="640" height="480"></iframe>
