  1. That is for the united kingdom and if it is a self employed business i don't have to claim any money made under the table and i don't have to worry about workers comp and benefits because this is like one of those places that aren't official but are made by craftsman its not like I'm opening shop on main street. you should probably ignore that and I'm gonna say I'm a long way from starting a business also I'm getting my drivers license during spring break so yeah that's going to be wonderful now i can go places
  2. the forge has been doing great and i tried what Thomas Powers said about making the fire in the forge and that has worked very well. it heats up in mear seconds. photos might not come in until the 16th.
  3. I haven't changed just needed some time to straighten out some stuff. getting back into the swing of things been very busy almost got a nail done. that is exactly what I've been saying all along
  4. hey guys I'm still looking at the post I'm very tired today I went to bed early last night around 5:30 and woke up at 930 and didn't go back to sleep and I'm going to the BANK today yay so I can get my very own checking account set up as I move my way towards being more independent and just wait till next year then I can vote and do other stuff. but I'm not feeling to well so I'm gonna skim over them and read them fully in detail tomorrow. but JustAnotherViking I agree this is not like buying a boat which Is a colossal investment but this this craft can pay for itself by making nails if you need them etc, etc but to those who run a successful shop how did you get started and how did you become successful and what are you opinions on this new imported steel tax has it affected your business any and the reason that I'm asking that question is because that may affect my means of getting new steel at good prices and is a good econ question that we might can get points for.
  5. we don't have a lot of fairs and the only big event we have is in Walhalla which is the October fest and it is basicly rides, beer and food nothing more. Trent said that people who are going to these places are looking for deals. Getting paid is the hard part who would want to buy stuff for these prices. I'm also going to experiment with a gas forge to reduce cost and time for heating. but like I said take a look at google maps the farthest I could get would maybe westminister if I'm lucky
  6. well what I should have said was I don't know if I'm going to make bbq items or stuff like j and s hooks. your right it is a skilled craft but can I really charge that for the quality of the work like if it take me 2 hours to produce lets say 5 then for those five I have to get 24 plus materials and the basic cost of the item which puts me around 30- 35 dollars which isn't bad really for a bbq fork or spoon. and this over head thing is it like the parts you don't know about or something like that
  7. I haven't figured it all out what I'm gonna sell it needs to be in a market with a good sale price and is fast to make.
  8. well the thing about the etsy page is one you have to have a bank account, which I'm getting very soon. The other is that you pay them so much per Item which increases the price on the item. I don't know how shipping works. also I haven't got anything made yet I'm still learning but this is a start up project for econ and a business venture I wanted to do. Craigslist is a definite maybe. key rings are a good start bottle openers a somewhat of a challenge but I might can wing it. my fuel is going to be coal and I'm getting 100lbs for 79.60 free shipping but I could have gotten 3/4 of a ton of coal for 250 but tractor supply was being something id rather not say. put in an order for a whole pallet and it was a month later and they still didn't have it. well my time is worth 7.25 which is minimum wage for sc. but my items are worth $50 per item the most I could get out of a $35 knife if I made a good one which is 7.25h+m+p= total cost which it could take me less than an hour to make an item and I would still end up with a less than average quality product for full price.
  9. Hello, this is the first thread ive started in a while trying to get back in the swing of things. Heres the idea I want to do a small business making nails, s hooks, j hooks, bbq items, etc.now I asked trent on purgatory iron works about starting in a flea market and he said that was a bad idea. question one is where do I start and what are more things I can produce enough of to sell and where do I sell them at. This is also going to be a double project for my econ class as I'm still in high school. Now before you get all go here and there I want you to realizes a few things one is I live in the middle of nowhere I live in salem, sc 29676 look it up almost a ghost town now. I only have my permit so I cant really drive anywhere. Funding is quite short I have a basic brake rotor forge that isn't the best in the world. I don't have a really good shop set up either. the other main question is that how do I charge for things when I know the quality of my work is far less than what you can buy something for.
  10. they dont fit they are done but they dont fit and even if they were the same size loop they still wouldnt fit. would send pics but cant until the middle of the month
  11. yes its good to be back and I will have some pictures up later in the moth when I get my phone. and I am probably going to be doing mass production. or something close to it also new update the side I had finished has to have some work done to it.
  12. Now since I have some time and please forgive my spelling but here is a more accurate description of what when on over the long break I took. what happened at school is that I did not get withdrawn from the IEP but I did get a shortened class time with the tutorial lab. I got into independent Spanish study which I don't have to go to a class for and I don't have a fourth block and that is why I can leave at 2:00. The truck I put a new gear driven starter and it now works but I got it stuck the other day and I now have to get a power steering belt for it. The Forge got another redesign and it is now fully functional with the exception that is has too much airflow I bought a proper blower. Now I don't have a phone to take photos yet but maybe around the 16th I might so I can take some photos of the tongs. With that said our birthday was last Thursday and we are 17 years old and the part time job I'm still finding out about hopefully today. In Economics we are looking at starting a bissnuess and we are looking at starting a forging operation and selling stuff at the flea market and making money that will be in another thread but I'm glad to be back on the forums.
  13. hey guys sorry for not posting but guess what i got one side done and im going to start on the otherside tomorrow or the next day i have stuff to get but heres what happened over the long pause. School: Got it sorted out and i now leave at 2:00 instead of 315 Truck: it now works put an new gear driven starter now thanks to all of you who helped with this i cant get any images up just yet maybe not till the middle of the month but they will come. i think i have found a part time job too also im 17 years and 3 days old now
  14. hey ya'll merry Christmas. now i know its been awhile since Ive been here but im gonna take a break from this because we got to get wood and fix my truck and im on my break so i got some work to do. but i will post my finished creation on here. when i get it finished so till then have a good christmas
  15. my torch keeps making a loud boom sound when i light it any ideas why
  16. mabye i had a fun day today with building fire and fixing the light in the wood shed so i can see to get wood at night and i got to do some more on the rebar. plus all of the stuff with the forge.
  17. i know what i missed i have more torch work to do.
  18. that kinda makes some sense. any way i got to wait till next weekend i got to find out why the pipe is clogging up. got a good heat and done some stuff with that.
  19. How come the op can't do it their self
  20. well this thread is looking dead well I might have the time this weekend to finish up the tongs and that will be it I will start on it Friday repairing the forge and setting it up for one more burn. and Saturday hopefully I will have them done and close it at which point I will ask glen to kindly do. but for know stick with me and I will get it done I know some of you are probably angry or upset that I used compressed oxygen to get the fire going. but with out the diesel fuel I cant start my fires so I'm having to use laves and a little oxygen to get it started and that's it. but I will take your advice glen on how to fix the rotor forge. so I hope you had a happy thanksgiving while I'm taking the week to get my grades up and I smell something in the lunch room that smells good but probably wont taste as good. so by the end of this weekend if I can fix the forge I should have them ready.
  21. Good morning. I'm gonna have to stay late after school today for my IEP meeting so I can get rid of it so I wont be doing anything today. now enough about that. the forge is in the shop as well as the cutting torch. now I'm gonna fix it up probably tomorrow. I'm gonna use the dirt box forge for the mount. and I will be available during 10:30-12:20. and right now
  22. done this. and its a 3 way switch lo off and hi i start the fire in the fire barrel and shovel the coals out of the barrel into the fire. forge
  23. yeah we used leaves and some pine and gave it one good airblast i cut the oxygen pressure down on the torch and switched to my smaller torch
