  1.   The handle is too big for such a small and thin blade and looks like there are gaps in the leather washers. A buffing wheel is great for finishing leather handles, try it.

I would never differently temper such a thin blade, specially being a bowie, because it will likely bent when put to heavy use . The recasso needs to be more pronounced and you could add a choil before it to make easy to sharpen.

  2.    Project made in December 2016, spring steel blade, stainless guard and butt cap is from a vice jaw.

Materials for the handle are pine, leather, brass and pau santo wood.

I made this way back when i didn't have a neither a proper forge, anvil or belt sander so its all shaped using files and an angle grinder. I've overheated a bit the blade and tempered it over the forge to a dark straw twice hoping it would be sufficient for it not to break, still I never tested it for strength, it's only a showpiece.

    Enjoy...

  3. Judging by the textures of the blade it seems you have overheated the steel what also caused the warp. Even after tempering the blade will still be too hard so dont be surprised if it breaks. I've had same experience when heat treating spring steel and even when I tempered it to blue color the tip instantly broke.

What I would do :straighten the blade , anneal  , heat to cherry red and quench.

What you got there fits more into a hunting knife type, tanto is different beast.

  4.   It appears the blade is bent in the 6th picture and those file scratches in the ricasso are nasty.

You done well with the pattern weld but needs a lot of polishing, truing the bevels and removing the scratches.  Does your sister in law deserve the extra effort?Up to you.

    Cheers

  5. For a first not bad, you did a lot of mistakes but that is a good thing because you can learn something and evolve .

Following what other's above said, I will ad that your handle scales are extending to the blade edge, it isn't  practical nor pretty.

Nice work, did you forge the bevels or grind them?

The bevels were ground off because I didnt have the anvil , so I've only forged the tip onto a face of a sledgehammer.

    Cheers

  7. A project I've done in February, first dagger made from a half-round file and inspired by the Fairburn-Sykes fighting knife.

    It's a 7" (17,5cm) blade, 1/4" thick and 11/2" total lenght.
