Him and my dad were trying to get a '57 Belaire started, he was pouring gas into the carb when it back fired. Lost his eyebrows and a bit of his beard

Yes, that's what happened to me, but I wasn't putting gas in there.   I JUST had to look and see if the accelerator pump was working and it chose just that moment to backfire.  A flameball shot out.  I was young and had nobody to teach me some things.  I learned a missing engine does not neccessarily mean a fuel problem real quick.

It's all good as long as we learn from our mistakes, and nobody get's hurt.

I will say I blinked at the right moment.  My eyelashes were fused to each other.  Somebody was looking over me.  On more than one occassion.....

This is one hazard kids don't face today, fuel injectors and all....

  2.   A lot.

I went to Flea Market Friday after work this am and got a what looks like brand new collet set, some traps, a hammer and a ladle.  I already have a collet set and got it cheap, so I will pass that on to someone as a bargain for them and wee bit of profit for me.  Friday markets are good, most people are at work.  I never have figured out why they have it then.

you may want to research an alloy called Tumbaga

I'm studying that right now.  Thanks.  I sent out some emails requesting contacts, links, details etc on that chicken.

my papers and books are still pretty chaotic from moving to Laramie

Trust me, I can relate to that.  Thanks for the offer and I would still like to see that postcard if you happen upon it.

appears to have been quite an interesting person

Indeed....:). I have enjoyed looking at her other photos.  Thanks for those links.

  4.   That's cool Jerry.  I have not been doing much actual making or creating in shop lately so I am spending a lot of time educating myself on all things metal, forging, processes (stuck on reverberatory furnace's right now ), the history behind it all in general, things that I wish I would have learned long ago, and that includes "Blacksmith in Art"!  Some of it's not very mindblowing but it's all fun.....:)

I have a post card published just after World War 1 of a pile of German artillery with a French rooster on top.

That may be really personal thing but if not, it would be interesting to see.

  6.   To tell you the truth, the old rooster that fell off when it burned down is more appeling to me than the nice shiney new one, the more I look at it.  I don't think I would plate something going way up there, under the circumstaces, just to weather off.

  7.   I was watching the news this morning about the unveiling of the Notre Dame Cathedral Spire and what caught my attention was the gold rooster on top.  I couldn't find much on who actually made it or any details, but one site said it was made of "gold copper".  I looked that up and found Tumbaga, an alloy used in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.  I would like to know what this rooster is made of.

      I did find this:

"It's a phoenix," said Philippe Villeneuve, the chief architect of historical sites who designed the flame-shaped rooster.  (It) shows that the flame is carried to the highest point of the cathedral... the fire is carried up there, but it's a fire of resurrection," he said, recalling the moment when he was holding the fallen rooster in front of cameras after the devastating fire.

Here's a link to the history of the Rooster, it has some religious content, in case that's a concern:

     https://www.friendsofnotredamedeparis.org/cathedral/artifacts/rooster/

I also watched a video on the creation of the bottom part of the spire called the trestle which is wood and was impressive.

Maybe this should go in "Everything Else" section but I am interested in the Gold Rooster and what it's made of.

  8.   Irondragon, you have a nice collection of lamps.  Dad had a some as well, but my sister has them.  I do have a tiny potbelly stove that he kept near his recliner vented out the sidewall.  He liked to run it on cold nights, probably more for the fact than heat,  but he also used it as we would use a paper shredder today....

I will have to dig it out and take a photo.

  9.   George, it was too far gone.  It would grow back unevenly anyway.  I buzzed it all off and now my lumpy head shows off.  Reminds me of boot camp.  Some people don't look good bald.  I will wear a hat for a while.
