I was just looking at the thread Davor started about the Viking ship candle holder and got to wondering if something like that would go with the bouquet. It could even be a separate piece to be placed out when wanted. Unfortunately I'm not talented enough to make one.

JHCC made an ingenious stack for his coal forge that went outside of his shop door and was kinda portable. I'll see if I can find the thread.

I have been collecting kerosene lamps ever since I got out of the USCG and left my last Light Station in '68. I was the last service member stationed there as it was scheduled for automation. As a remembrance the Civilian Keeper gave me the main light's stand by lamp, an Aladdin mantle lamp. I still use this lamp if the lights go out and I don't feel like starting the generator for such a short outage. Since then I've probably acquired another couple of dozen lamps.

Welcome from the Ozark Mountains. I believe you are correct Billy, I can see ENGLAND under the Patented so I would say some time during or after after 1910 was when she was made. A great looking Peter Wright to boot, Have you done a ring & rebound test Manhole? All she needs is wire brushing to clean up the rust and some BLO or wax to protect and please no welding, grinding or milling to the hardened steel face which does more harm than good.

Looks like a pretty good 72 pound Hay Budden to me. How did it do on the ring & rebound test? Serial number A3110 was made in 1918 the range for that year is A1-A12,000. The price was certainly right.

Eric, I wish you luck. Another thing to consider is the distance from home to the new shop. Commuting can become a nightmare in the winter and in good weather it will definitely raise your blood pressure. When we lived in Florida my commute was only 15 miles and lots of time it took 45 min. due to traffic and accidents. South Florida drivers are possibly the worst or at least on a par with NYC.

Typically the hundreds weight markings are seperated by dots but not always. These figures were stamped into the finished anvil and are often not very deep. The first figure to the left is hundred weights which equal 112 pounds. The next figure is quarter hundred weights which equal 28 pounds and the last number is whole pounds. The three are added together for the total weight. Examples:

2 · 1 · 3 = (112 x 2) + 28 + 3 = 255 pounds

The second place is never over 3 so if you have difficulty reading the number it is a 1, 2 or 3. The last place is never over 28 and most often is a single digit or less than 20. "

My 110 pound Vulcan is also in very good shape and it's my go to anvil in the shop. It's marked 10 but on an accurate scale it does weigh 110 pounds, made in 1943, the only damage is a chip back by the heel, probably from a missed strike. I love it for it's quiet sound no ear plugs needed.

That is probably the weight in English Hundredweight system, but the L is probably a 1 which=112 pounds the 3=28x3 (can't be over 3 and the 70 is actual pounds making the weight at time of mfg. 266 us pounds. (112+84+70)

I can't add anything else to what Frosty said and he saved me a lot of typing Thanks Frosty) good review. We won't remember your location once leaving this post, hence the suggestion to add it in your profile. If you find need for a sharp edge, you could always fall back on the block of stainless steel, just mount it a little more solid to keep it still. A coating of latex calking compound will help with that and help deaden the ring.

My new PCP has a Nurse PA and she is great with years of experience. I think she is teaching him some stuff like bedside manner and how to talk with older patients (like me). I really hate breaking in a new doctor.

This is not medical advice but my own personal observation.

Another thing you might have your doctor check is your testosterone level. After surviving testicular cancer in 2017 at age 74 I began finding my strength and stamina starting to wane. Every time I went to my PCP for my annual check up, I would mention that to him. He had been my doctor for over 30 years and I figured he knew my body better than I did. He would always tell me it was normal as we age and said that a testosterone level test wasn't warranted. Well he retired back in 2019 or 2020 and I got a new PCP who took his place. We hit it off from the start even though he was a lot younger and a D.O.

He knew I was retired and did blacksmithing as a hobby and was very interested in that. When I told him that I went from being able to pick up and carry a 120 pound anvil, to struggling to move something that weighed about 40 pounds and had to use pliers to open the stupid aluminum seal on a can of coffee, along with only being able to work in the forge for an hour or two instead of all day.

He decided that he would test my T-level as part of my physical. Normal T-levels for my age are something like 200-400 and mine came back at 40. He put me on T-Gel therapy and now I'm pretty much back with my strength and stamina before chemo & radiation treatment. Although I haven't had to pick up an anvil, I can pick up a 40 pound sack of dog food and carry it to the truck and open those coffee cans using just my thumb & index finger. So definitely my strength has returned and I can swing my hammer most of the day instead of having to quit after an hour.

My thought is if the inscription is actually "steady" it could be referring to a tool most Blacksmith's use to hold long stock in the forge and on the anvil. It has many names like "third hand", "stock support", "stock rest" and a couple others that don't come to mind right now. The term steady rest usually used with a metal or wood lathe though.  Possible he used a lathe as many smiths do have and use one. So I could see that inscribed on an old tombstone.

One that I made can be seen next to the anvil in this picture and is portable and adjustable for height.
