  1. lol ik that it is a broad topic but just wanted ideas to have things to make

I was mostly interested to know which tools would be good for making hot slit tools

would the head of a garden hoe be any good?

and what type of metal do you think it would be

  2. what do you mean AIA??

Yes indeed, first year forged Trenton.  AIA indicates 1898.  If you chalk higher up on the side above the USA stamp, we may see remnants of the circular "SOLID WROUGHT" stamp or Trenton  diamond. Thanks for the pics!

Also im curious to know, as far as anvil brands go, how does a Trenton rank?

Thanks for the clarification Marc1. I was going off an unreliable memory. Dillion's pain, if I understood correctly, also isn't a direct result of the craft. I just want him to be healthy, lifted up, not cast down as it were.

And you did understand correctly, basically if I do anything my hand hurts enough within 5 or so minutes that I'm nearly in tears

  4. Woodworking, metalsmithing, blacksmithing and bladesmithing, currently for blacksmithing/blacksmithing the only things I have is a small forge (in the proceses of making a new one) an anvil, a 2.5# hammer(still gotta smooth the face) a pair of tongs and a pair of vice grips, a vice that I use for twisting, a charcoal take that I forged, a monkey/pipe wrench, and a railroad spike that didn't have a head on it so I ground a semi sharp edge to use as a hot slit(decent but not perfect.

Preferably of there are decent blacksmithing/blacksmithing tools I could make that's what I would prefer the most for now

I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was beryllium, and that the Vikings didn't allow a man who was of an age to father children to be a Smith because of the poisonous effects. Since I can't cite references i won't vouch this as accurate. I do have a couple of books about Vikings at home but I'm at work now and can't check.

If it wouldn't be to much to ask will you read up on them when you get the chance

You most likely have a very early U.S. Trenton anvil, forged like the German ones.

Scrub the front foot under the horn for remnants of a serial number.  Usually just to the right of the handling hole in the foot.

Well, I had to go home to get something for the house in working on, and I took a second to check and it does faintly look like numbers or something is on the front foot just like you suggested, when I get done with work today I'll be sure to wire brush it and give it a better look,

Looks like you have lots of info right in front of you.  Take a wire wheel cup on an angle grinder and clean this area.

I can see the 131, and part of the other stamping.

    test.jpg

I cleaned those areas and all that was there was the letters USA and underneath that and just to the left 131

also are there any ideas what brand/age my anvil may be, as well as how it was probably made

  8. hello all, I have 2-4 old felling axe heads, 2 or 3 hoe blades, and multiple other broken tools of similar natures, and I was wondering what are some tools I could make from these, also I have A LOT of rebar (if it is classed as junk but just putting it out there if as a possibility) and a lot of 1/2 inch square bars that are mild steel

    Don't you love Dr Google?

Dillion, if you really are 17 and do not play computer games and use a computer, not a laptop or tablet or phone ... I am confused.

I use a computer to do a lot of my research but other than that no video games and same for phone I use it to talk to people and to do research that's it.

Vulcan was an immortal god and a blacksmith, but he was a cripple. You have it so much better these days, and better examples to follow. I wish you well in treatment and recovery. An hour drive now needs top priority.

I wish I could but the big issue is my parents work till dark almost everyday but I did ask my mom and she said we are going ot see my doctor about the middle of this month to get my medicine refilled
