  1. That is what I'd prefer it to look like I wouldn't mind doing all the writing, and I'm considering screwing them to a board and staining the board Wow now I feel dumb lol that seems like a great idea Wow this is why I love this place there are always great suggestions like that I wish I had thought of it sooner lol
  2. lucky you, it isn't called Sandhill for the heck of it lol
  3. so everybody, we have always had a wood sign that has the words Grants established 1995 burned into it, well, my mom really wants me to forge our last name which is obviously Grant out of metal she said it was ok if the letters are separate and ive been trying to figure out how to make the letters where they will look nice the G needs to be capitalized and the rest of them need to be lower cased, I have figured out how to make the t but that is it any help would be really appreciated I was hoping to finish it before Christmas so it could be a gift like I have said I have a huge supply of 1/2 mild steel I was considering thinning it down but idk how small I need to go
  4. no lol, im about 15 minutes from Kinston North Carolina, but put it this way the place I actually live in is called the Sandhill Township, and honestly there is maybe 5 or 6 inches of actual Dirt and then it is nothing but sand
  5. im actually considering that lol but sand was the simplest thing to use at least until I could get time to take a trip to get some lol
  6. I certainly did lol, it was great to finally be able to make that baby ring, its been almost 2 weeks since the last time I had forged any that's honestly the longest I have gone without forging
  7. great that's really good to hear, well, im gonna get off for now and start making my anvil ring
  8. I understand that it would be the "best" thing to clay everything, the issue is that I don't have enough clay, so what I finished out with is about 3 inches of clay for the bottom of the entire box, and the walls of my trench are made of clay they are about 2-3 inches thick, and the rest of the box is filled with sand, I am considering either packing bricks in the sand so that I wont have to fight the sand when I need to rake charcoal in or just making a top layer of clay which do yall think would be best?
  9. Well, I was meaning if I did the walls of the fire pit approximately 3-4 inches thick and the bottom approximately 2-4 inches of clay
  10. Ok sorry everybody I'm not tryikng to get annoying it's just I didn't know of there were actual things I needed to do in a specific order
  11. So i guess the walls for my actual fire pit and the floor could be clay and then fill everything else with sand?
  12. So I know it has probably been mentioned sometime earlier but I gotta ask, what are the different proceses used in blacksmithing and what would be good things to do with my 1/2 inch square stock to practice my skills and to get better a good guideline would be really helpful
  13. yeah, idk about the Wood ash but as far as the Saw dust, traditional Japanese Swordsmiths would use straw that was chopped up into 2 or 3 inch pieces mixed with clay to make it stronger, almost like a natural version of cement and rebar/wire mesh
  14. hey yall I hit a road block I wasn't expecting, any advice about the easiest and most efficient way to mix up the clay I dug up, I have pieces ranging from pea size all the way to pieces bigger than a bowling ball
  15. Lol nice, and yeah I get the whole medicine can help thing, but medicine ain't cheap lol
  16. Well actually yes I have been playing a few years maybe 3 or so, but the pain was am issue even before then, just in general I've had this pain for about 5 years but it gets worse every year
  17. Neil, I'm not a grindersmith, I half forge and heat treat my blades that I have made I have ground out one blade and that was just for the heck of it
