here are a few photos I took today at work after I wire wheeled it .... I still couldn't totally make out the weight so I placed it on our truck scales which has a 20 lb. variance .. the serial number is 13702.... I'm waiting on my Anvils in America book to arrive so if anyone could help with a year of manufacture it would be great !! thanks, JT

Maybe you should make a hammer or something out of your 250lb Soderfors!

for all your thoughts and help in suggesting a fair market value and the condition of this Anvil, and the insight into Arm & Hammer Anvils in general and the rarity of the large ones.. I found it to be very helpful in my decision to go ahead with the purchase of it, and once I get it I will add more photos of it, and more as I clean it.. JT

Oh well ... I tried. Negotiation skills include not being afraid, but it's your money.
Being a rare anvil and a rare size, if you can pay $1500 or 1600, you will not regret it. If you can pay $1400 even better
well my first offer to her was $1500.00 but was rejected right off the bat.. she was told by someone she respects that it was worth $2000.00 to $2500.00 and to not take any less then $1800.00.. after talking with her we compromised on the price and its now mine.. JT

Probably saw my area code and figured I wouldn't drive a couple states to get it and didn't reply. People do that all the time. For 1600 bucks bring take that bad boy home!
Hi Benjaman, she probably didn't respond because I had a deal in place with her already.. JT

she's not going to accept that !! someone she respects told her what the prices are going for around her area and advised her not to take any less then $1800 and she already reluctantly came down to $1600.. I don't feel she will come down any further ..

well I must say they aren't very good at supplying the photos I asked for.. although I am dealing with a lady.. I asked for photos of the face, but she didn't know what the face was and asked if they could either lay a yard stick or a level across the length of the anvil to see if it has any sway, but got the photo with the tape measure ... she did admit to not knowing the first thing about anvils.. and she is sorry but anvils just aren't their thing !! but she has come down to $4.00 a lb. based on 400lbs. the last photo is to show the comparison in size to anvils in the 100+ size range..

If Its in nice condition that is a fair price. You don't run across anvils that big everyday and big A&H anvils are super rare. They are are beyond good.
thank you all for responding !! I will post more photos when I get them and ask the seller more questions.. as of now, its mine if I want it, I just need to find out a bit more to decide ..

well they are supposed to send me more photos today, here is another poor photo they sent yesterday. they said it was there fathers who is I think they said is 86 and he bought it when he was 20 from a rock quarry.. they said someone told them by looking at the photos and measurements it was 400 lbs.. and they tried to weight it on a scale that only went to 350 lbs. and it immediately maxed it out.. looks closer to 5 3/4" face.. not sure what the bottom looks like waiting on more photos.. they may be a bit high on their price.. they are talking $4.50 a Lb. @ 400 lbs. they may come down a bit , I don't know though..
-
hello, I ran across this Arm & Hammer Anvil said to be 400 Lbs. I can't make out much in the photo.. its 38 3/4" long with a 25 3/8" X 6" face. It stands 15 1/2" tall and has a base that's 15" X 13" with the photos I have I was wondering what a fair market value would be for it ?? thanks for any responses .. JT

thank you Michael, I looked up side draft forges and see what you mean.. this could be pretty easily altered and isn't to far off the dimensions I see in some of the drawings... its made out of pretty heavy gage steel..I would have very little invested into it .. maybe its worth a try.. JT

Thanks JT! I tried to have a 200 pounder shipped to me by UPS, and the guy said it would be $690! He also said an anvil is like the awesomest thing you can buy!
yes C-1ToolSteel, I know what you mean.. I checked all the shippers and found YRC by far the cheapest.. I'm not sure how some of these guys are shipping as cheap as they list shipping for on eBay... all I can figure is they are adding it into their reserve price. I saw those same quotes from UPS and FedEx .. the delivery guy that brought mine was in awe of it and said its been a very long time since he has seen one !! lol JT

Congratulations! Have you convinced the wife it's traditional to keep a new anvil in the living room? The part about the heavy duty zip ties holding it together made me smile.
Get ready to smile a LOT.
Frosty The Lucky.
thank you Frosty !! well not just yet.. I may just slip it in and set it in front of the fire place and hope she doesn't notice it !! lol it is a beauty and such a smooth face !! yes I was a bit hesitant at first about those zip ties but those things really worked well and were actually quite hard to cut loose !! ended being a great idea !! JT
C-1 ToolSteel... I used YRC Freight I did the Quote on line it was cheaper that way.. they were cheaper then any freight company I found. even much cheaper then any quote I got through U-ship.. it was $120.00 from PA. to Mi. but I even checked not long ago from Ca. to Mi. and it was only $140.00.. weight didn't seem to make any difference... U-ship the cheapest was $190 up to $395 !! JT
