having trouble forge welding

Good day all. So I was trying to weld up a billet to Forge into an axe. I have quite a bit of new leaf spring which I assume is 5260 I attempted to weld. I could not get it to stick. I have read it is difficult but for some reason thought I could it. So it also difficult to weld 5160 to other steels or just to itself. -
First few hours on the Forge. Produced a couple of rr spike knives. They are still in progress. The one with the twisted handle is my first. It got left in the fire too long and I lost a ton of material. Don't think it will come out im done hammering on that one. The other is coming along. a little more forging left on that

Ya I had a good week. Buddy Lent me his old Forge since he set up a new bigger one. And offered it to me for 40$. As well a bad of coal for 40. And now this anvil which will likely stay for good.

So that's good? Certainly feels good to me with my few hours of experience.

Thanks for the replies Everyone! Very helpful. But a friend of my dad has Lent me his indefinitely! Don't know too much about it. But I got to start working some steel today. Very exciting and oddly enough relaxing. The anvil is 45kg and has seen very little use. Can anyone tell me anything about it?

Quick questions about the t burner. So I am not intentionally changing your plans. I grabbed my supplies the other day. But grabbed a 3/4 t not the 1x 3/4 Will this function well? Or will it be total trash. The store about an hour each way so I would really like to avoid another trip.

I'm waiting for more pictures and info. I guess will ask better questions. Does it look to be in good shape? Usable? Any thoughts other than it being anvil shaped.

This anvil came up on kijiji he says there is an m on the side. Any info would be appreciated. As well to me it looks beat up. Whats your opinions?

Great thanks guys. Have some fabrication and welding time in my dad's shop but never spent time with a Forge. Feel more prepared now.

There is a pottery club in town is any of the kiln supplies good for a Forge. What temp does the brick need to be rated to?
