  1. What is the "proper" height for a  vise?  Starting the anvil base and stand.  I know this is a wide open question just looking for some guidance on the floor to top of jaw measurement.  Seems like it should be taller then the anvil but that's a guess.

    Thanks

  2. You got me there!  Guess if it breaks again I can always repair it again...just wondering if there's a better way.

    thanks Biggundoctor

No go on stretching the old rivet. It is only about 3/4" long and ate up.  It looks like two rivets were used not one. But a 5/16" bolt will go all the way through.  Is there an advantage to a rivet, other than historically correct, that I'm not seeing?  If there is, one rivet or two?  I have seen pictures of Cole's with bolts and rivets.

  4. Question????

The hinge on this vise had rivets.  One side was broken the other side came apart(broke) during electrolysis.  Any suggestions on what I should put back in?  The vise does not show much wear and...it will not be original as I do not have the anvil/hold down piece.  So I'm going to put it to work in the shop.

Rivet or bolt?  Grade 2, 5 or 8 with ny-lock.  All thoughts are welcome.  I'm leaning toward a bolt as it would be stronger feel free to adjust my attitude

Pic below is after electrolysis with oil.  Electrolysis is stump stupid easy!

    Thanks

  5. I went to check on an Peter Wright anvil yesterday.  I knew from the add that it was in an antique/flea market.  Didn't find the anvil so I asked the owner.  Turns out it was a 168# in great shape and went for over $700 VERY quickly after the add posted.  The owner said that as soon as the TV shows started he has not been able to keep any blacksmithing items in the store.  He said he has several people coming in weekly.  So...none of that stuff will ever available.  Back to my ASO.

Papy , I  researched all I could find on your vise and believe it was made by Roberts and Langworthy iron works Dubuque Iowa. The old hardware catalogs just  list them as star vises.  Some are marked L&R mfg co. With a raised star. The company became Adams Farwell and even manufactured automobiles. It's still in business as the Adams co. Manufacturing gears. Very interesting history.

Wow I wish I had your research skills. I didn't find any more about this vise.  Thank you for the info.  Just makes me want to get it back in service even more.  I'll get it de-rusted and then get to work.

Thanks Gray Iron and everyone else for the ideas!

  7. Thanks everyone

As always read a lot beware of a lot of info on the web. I have plenty of rebar sounds like a safer bet. Wasn't sure how I was going to get a cookie sheet away from the better half anyway. Maybe this weekend if the charger will work

    thanks

  8. Thanks Guys

I'll check my charger.  This seems like it's pretty straight forward.  The article I read said hours not day though.  Also said to use an aluminum cookie sheet for an electrode.  May have to experiment a little.

    Thanks Again for the help

I was just reading about that last night.  I think your right and plan to give it a try.  The jaws don't look like they have been used at all.  It will be a fun project. I'll post some pictures when I'm done.

I did a patent search and the 426,360 1890 patent picture sure looks close.  Being an old tool hound I want to rebuild this vise.  As this is a hobbie not a business time is not an issue.  I have plate and a welder (and a master welder that's a buddy).  You said most of them broke.  What would you use to make the piece that connects the jaw to the bench mount.  I was thinking two pieces with the right size hole and then welded together.  Looks like this piece would need to be 1/2" thick.  Am I chasing a ghost or could I have a functioning vise for light work?  Lord knows I don't "Need" another vise but you can always "Use" another vise.

Thank you for the information.  All I could find was Cole and BC Goble vise pictures.

  11. That was all I could find.  I thought it was a post vise when I saw it but then when we unburied it not so much.  I'll google Cole Vise and see.  Thanks for the help.

  12. Can someone tell what this is and/or what parts are missing.  This is a vise as those sure look like vice jaws.  But not sure from there. Picked up at a hundred year old barn. This was all the pieces.

  13. CL find.  Picked it up this morning.  After some cleaning and adjustment I think I'm going to try to get another year or two out of it.  Anybody have any ideas as to brand or age?  1950's?  No markings I can find.  How do you get pic's turned  every time they need to rotate 90 degrees. Even when I rotate them on the I pad

  14. Best stuff was a shame.  Someone had thrown the tack outside and the leather was rotten.  I took the rings and made the hammer holder this afternoon.  I have a bunch more rings now just need some more hammers. The other pile is just useful stuff.  Good thing the shop is detached.  Snuck it all in before the "DG" saw I was home.  Best score left with my daughter for wedding decoration.  About 10' of hand made chain.  I would guess the chain to hang animals with. Several of the old cabinets and jars went home with them also.  Good day spent with the kids and grandkids.  Huh not sure how I got that that large.

  15. Thanks all

I'll make tools with the pins and anchor clips.  Then more practice with the spikes.  We just got back from clearing a hundred year old barn for demo.  Lots of usable stuff came back to the shop.  Now if the weather clears up I can get to work. Forge is outside.

    Thanks again!
