Thanks DC.
I'm always ready to hear a good story...usually learn something. In reading I'm about to get rid of the water in the bucket and replace it with oil.

Thanks Dick
One of the "pins" is marked for a rounding hammer after I learn some more. Lots of rail work going on in the areas I travel maybe I can get lucky again.

Thanks EJ
That pin is solid. Has a wire soldered to the top and another wire soldered about 2/3 the way down. I got three. Thanks again!

I caught up with a RR rework crew. I was the only one stopped at the crossing (out in the country) so what the heck I asked and they threw some of what they had in the truck. I know there's a spike in the middle what are the other two pieces and what kind of steel are they. The "pin" sure didn't want to cut on the chop saw.
Thanks

Thanks from a real newbe. Got the break drum forge together a couple of weeks ago and from what I have read the last couple of nights, have done about everything wrong! Thanks to all for answering newbe questions. My next pair of tongs WILL be better.

That would suck!
I have read some about quenching in oil. No one ever says what kind of oil. Clean/used motor oil? Something more exotic?
Different oil different metals?
Thanks
