  1. Interesting! Golf has been a large part of my life..from working at a golf course to playing at a high level of competitive golf in high school to being washed up and playing club golf in college. My question to you is what type of iron do you have in mind/ Are you thinking a blade style iron or a cavity back style iron? I doubt a blade style would be hard to make crudely to try out, but a cavity back is way beyond me. I happen to know that a pitching wedge is somewhere in the neighborhood of 48 degrees angled, so if that is what you are looking for then you'd need some sort of device to measure the angle while you tweaked it hot. You'll also want to pay attention to the grind of the sole of the club head, as this can be make or break in terms of hit-ability off of different lengths of grass. Brent
  2. I just started smithing, but I found that they make great Christmas gifts. I'm a college student so money is tight for gifts, but time over break was plentiful to make everyone a gift. Gifts ranged from bottle openers to fire pokers to vine bottle holders to split crosses, etc.
  3. Keep in mind I'm brand new to smithing...but here are three that I've made. They all open bottles pretty easily. I'm sorry for od angles, apparently IFI isn't very IPhone camera work friendly. Oh and they all have the same type of jaw to open the bottle, I haven't got around to making a drift big enough to make a bottle opener the more classic way. Let me know your thoughts, and don't hold back. Brent
  4. Just wanted to say hello to everyone on here from Michigan. I just joined yesterday after creeping as a guest for awhile to obtain information. A little about me: I'm 20 and a Mathematics Major in college. I picked up blacksmithing this past summer because I thought it sounded fun and built my own forge (not a good design but it works), and bought cheap vise and ASO from harbor freight to get me started. Here are some pics of my set up, and some of my better (in my opinion) pieces. As of last weekend I now have a real anvil - Old 180lb Trenton (from Europe I think) but I have not got a chance to get it home yet, much less use it. For now it sits in my living room at college. I also acquired an old buffalo forge hand crank blower, but could not get it to put out enough air to get my current forge to run hot enough to do anything but make nails. I think Ill have to redesign the forge as I have been using a shopvac. Thank you for looking, let me know what you think about any or all of this! Brent
  5. Got my first real anvil last weekend, been lurking on here gaining knowledge for a couple months now, but decided I would finally make a profile. Anyway, after lots of looking at anvils I believe its a 180lb older Trenton possibly made in Germany to look like a Peter Wright. First picture should show a clear RENT with the R appearing to slant to form trentons diamond logo shape with the N being the tallest letter in the diamond. Note that its in my apartment at college for now, it should find its way back home soon. That is an American quarter for reference on size. Dimensions are 11 inches high, 26.5 inches heel to tip of horn, and 4.5 inch wide face. One inch hardy hole. I had been previously using a ASO from harbor freight...made all my Christmas gifts with it though. I think ill be happy with this upgrade.
