According to wikipedia Festus Haggen had been a trapper, laborer on the transcontinental railroad, solider for the south, ended up Marshall Dillons second deputy. He repeatedly states that he refuses to learn to read, because he has no way of knowing whether what he reads is true. Doesn't sound like a bad idea, sometimes. Wish I could say I wasn't old enough to remember some of this, but young enough to remember all of it.

Festus on Gunsmoke was NOT a blacksmith.

Nice stand Donnie, I'm sure it will work well for you. I like the anvil also.

Joel, This just keeps getting better and better. Thanks again for sharing all the info. Unless I've missed it, I haven't read anything about noise with several pieces running.

JHCC glad to see you got your stand done. I've been following all your design work. Keep everyone informed of how it works out.
Michael another classic stand. I really like the cookie sheet on the "old" stand. My wife brought one out to the shop just the other day, sounded like she wasn't planning on making any more cookies on it! A tray with a raised edge on it always works well for tools. I have made sure for several years that any punch, chisel, ect. has a flat on it to keep them from rolling onto the floor, that way I don't have to bend over and pick them up!! I have also used a window weight as a hold down for a long time.

Joel, this is very neat. Thanks for sharing. More please. I was a member of Rough & Tumble Engineers Historical Association in Kinzers PA. for several years, always wanted to set up the blacksmith shop like this.

Will52100, I sure hope that thing is where you want it!
Concerning all the medical discussion , lets be thankful we are "fearfully and wonderfully made"….. and can be repaired!

Very nice stand, Cadair, that everyone could build with simple tools, and accessible materials.

Hope everybody thinking about building a stand caught 01tundras mention of filling legs with sand.
Very good idea!

Classic stand Harry, everything handy and ready to work.

Ya gotta understand the back story… it was a stormy night...

Center pins need to be high enough off the ground to allow lower chamber to fully expand. You might want to use movable weight to adjust air flow, laying on top of top chamber.

Hi Bluffsider, Welcome. Check out athensforge.com, it's a very active blacksmith group in Athens AL. Good place to learn, make contacts. Next meeting Sat. Feb. 27.

That is a nice looking hammer. I really like some of the additional bracing. My tire hammer was built about 9 years ago, use it almost every day.

Eric thanks for the link and article.

Very ,Very Nice. Jim. How do you power the line shaft?
-
Love the bucket!! Check out "show me your anvil stand" for other ideas.

Thanks Stan & Forging Carver. The set started with the anvil that a friend cast for me almost 20 years ago. I put it on the stand for a paper weight, and have added to the set over the years as "play time" allowed. Most of the work has been done since my shoulder surgery in mid. Nov.

Thanks. The figure was forged out of 1/2"x1.5" ended up about 6.5" tall. The core are 1.750" dia. x about 6"long. The base was about 4" square.
For fun

Very Nice Joel! It is nice to just "play" sometimes. We should all do more of it.
