  2. Here's a "leaf" punch I made about 20 years ago. Cut the veins with a chisel, ground it to shape on a belt sander. Made from an old 3/8" allen wrench. Leaf measures about 1/4" square. I've used it on brass, copper, aluminum, cold mild steel. 59a560e829bf6_FullSizeRender4.thumb.jpg.38e0c4a00caa5a976d2699ea7642d385.jpg59a5610499258_FullSizeRender5.thumb.jpg.a0ac5ce9e9949171900314027d21b635.jpg

  4. You've made a good start. I still have my first "s" hook, it's an antique now! The best advise I ever received was to connect with a local blacksmith group, even if you have to expand "local" to several hours travel. I have learned most of what I know by my association with other smiths, and I bet there is someone in the group that will show you how to make tongs. With good tongs, things become way easier, and practice, practice, practice.

  5. The Athens Forge, a member of the AFC will meet Sat. July 22, at 10AM. We will continue the plan to focus the rest of the 2017 meetings on knife making. In April we talked about the different parts and styles of blades, and some common steels to use. In May we talked about the basic tools needed for knife making, and some tricky filing and fitting jigs, even had a box jaw tong demo. June was about abrasives. This meeting the focus will be on heat treatment. There will be open forge time for AFC members, and possibly a short forging demo.

  6. My main forge is set up on a mechanics roll around tool box, the mouth is about 44" from the ground. The drawers have provided good storage for useful tools, and other valuable stuff. I have enough hose that I can move the forge around when needed. There is a ball valve shut off at the back of the forge, another one step away on the wall. I run off a 250 gal. tank.
