A quick question about the peens of cross/diagonal peen hammers. which is better, a more radiuses peen or more narrow peen? I understand that less surface area contact is better, so maybe a narrower peen? I personally like the look of a fatter peen, but in the end function out ways looks.

what's the name of your YouTube channel. the web address didn't work for me. what size of a firepot did you use on your forge (assuming that you use coal)? I am thinking about making a striking anvil out of a forklift tine by drifting the hardy hole, and wasn't sure if my forge would be able to heat up such a large piece of steel. how long about did it take to heat up in the forge?

was it found with a metal detector? I also metal detect. first pic- some melted aluminum, second pic-looks like some melted lead, on top of an old stove lid, not sure exactly what the bracket thing was on. third pic-? fourth pic-some square nails and some other random things that I am not sure about, fifth pic-looks like the same bracket item, a piece of cast iron off of an old kettle, a couple square nails, melted aluminum and brass- I might be wrong. Sixth pic- some sort of hook item/farming piece? seventh pic-old bottle, bricks, square nails, crumpled brass hinge, some twisted wire eight pic-stove lid, and crumpled brass hinge, ninth pic-a couple washers and some large hunk of steel or cast iron tenth pic- the same bracket thing and crumpled hinge eleventh pic- another pic of the decorative bracket and some twisted wire twelfth pic- not exactly sure thirteenth pic- also not sure fourteenth pic-looks like a large square nail. some of this I am probably wrong about, but thought I would try.

I decided it was getting to late
yeah, I have found that whenever i forge till it is dark, ill be working on a project and say "oh, that looks pretty good" and then once I bring it inside to the light, its a whole other story.

if your anvil is of a type that should ring and it doesn't----then something is wrong!

Then again I have passed on certain items that I am kicking myself today for not buying
I do that a lot at the scrap yard, and then the next time I go it's gone. I have learned that if I want it I should probably get (if it is at the scrap yard, and paying scrap prices). I don't bother buying old tools at antique stores, almost always to overpriced. if it is under 5 dollars I almost always get it evan if it is worn to death, just to look at how it was made and try you mimick it.

check the ring
I didn't think that the ring really mattered. a piece of pipe rings well but doesn't mean that it is a great anvil.

how did it go?

the anvil looks to be in pretty good shape in the picture. darn them! id be the one to buy the tractor, keep the anvil and just sell the tractor, but that would probably be more work than its worth.

You guess?
Oh it was a play on words you just needs some honing to get a good handle on the game.
good one!

you could try and make a spring swage to make the rings, would be helpful if you ever planned on doing more than one.

Other jokes???
The knives that I make haven't lost their temper, and I didn't upset them. that's supposed to be a play on words, I guess.

For scrap yard prices i would have gotten the hand crank blower just for yard art.

Thanks Guys
I'll check my charger. This seems like it's pretty straight forward. The article I read said hours not day though. Also said to use an aluminum cookie sheet for an electrode. May have to experiment a little.
Thanks Again for the help
Papy
since I also metal detect I find quite a bit of iron "objects" and for me to electrolysis a horse shoe, it normally takes about a day not just a couple hours. im not sure about the larger items though.

I have heard that you want the legs to be at 83 degrees or else they will start to flex, correct me If I am wrong. another thing that I have heard, maybe Brian Brazeal came up with this, I cant remember, but is that you can fill the legs with a mixture of sand and oil to dampen the noise. I might not work with only 2 upright unless you had it mounted on a cement slab in the ground so that it doesn't fall over or weld a steel plate on it, but than again I might be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.

thanks everybody, it was a huge success. I even learned a few things!
-no one likes the horse shoe hearts that are on the table, they all want the one that Is hanging on a display stump on the table. lol
-it is nearly impossible to sell bottle openers at herb fests (I didn't even sell one
)
-everyone knows someone who does blacksmithing or welding or farrier work as a living, and never thinks that it is the 13 yr. old kid who does it.
-if you have to go to the bathroom or get something to eat, do it before the day starts because you wont get any time during the day.

Would this be a good starter anvil
depends on what your going to use it for. straightening nails, yes. forging anything bigger that 1/4 in. probably not. keep your eyes open for something better- it looks rather small, but that mainly depends on what you plan on doing.

you could get the large anvil see how it works, and if you don't like it you could try and "repair" it. if you don't like it at all, you could always sell it to someone else, anvils now a days are mostly outragesly priced and people still buy them.

Thanks do much for all of the ideas. They helped a lot. Any tips on how to display the items or any other tips on booths. Thanks again
