  1. Cooter go to the home page http://www.iforgeiron.com/
the tabs at the top click on Blue Prints (BP)
Ceramic kiln i would think lots of $
you can make yourself a forge from found scrap

    cooter
I looked and did not see a BP on a forge ( not sayin theres not one may have over looked or its not online yet) Look here there is a few forges gas & coal

Really not much to a coal forge need something for the coal to burn on with an air supply under the coal.

My brother in laws dad ( no longer with us) made gigs forged from leaf springs
I looked at Admiral Steel -http://www.admiralsteel.com/products/blades.html
5160 is what most springs are ,the widest I found was 4 in. & $$$

You say you wanted to cut them out not forge.Just thinking can you weld?
Or have some one Weld it for you? Like make 2 -1/2s out of 2 in and weld them to each other.

My Grand Dad ( Moms Dad) had to gig in the winter to help feed the family.
Mom tells- Everyone in town wanted to go with Tom giging ,he allways brought home tubs full of fish. I guess he was really good.
He passed before I was born and from what Mom has told me he made his gigs
only info she knew about his gigs they were as big as his hand.
    Not much help
I dont think forging would be that hard to do
I would think its like making a Fork -I think there is a BP on forks

  3. I use wet/dry paper in sheets and use a mild steel bar. I wrap the whole sheet on the bar. As I wear out a surface I tear it off or fold it up on top.
I clamp the blade to wood (2X4) in the post vice and shim under the blade tapper with cardborad or paper.
The mild steel bar is 3/16 X 1 1/2 X longer than the sheet where I can hold each end at the same time.I use it across the blade and the length as I go through the grts.
The rounded edges of the bar make a good raidus for where the blade meets the racasso.

When I dont feel the paper bite I move to a fresh spot.
I only go up to 600grt thats the look I like

  4. My first to stands were made from wood & look a lot like the one on the right
    in Peyton reply.
They were strong but bounced on the floor & had to bolt them down.
I wanted to be able to move my anvil ( I havent much room)
Thanks to the ice storm I got my wish Big Red Oak tree fell
It about killed me getting it across the feild full of cow pies about 200 yrds.
I removed the bark tring to reduce checking & might add a iron band around the top.
Its 22 in across the top & think I will leave it that size will be good to lay tools on.

Some day hope to have a better shop set up where I can bury a log on end
in ground like the old Blacksmiths.

  5. Not to worry Glenn
the old barrel came from a place that makes Jelly with removable lid.
One of the girls I went to school with - Her Dad was cutting tops from barrels
    and Boom it killed him.
I have cut a few with a cold chisel and allways filled with water first.
& I ant ever never weldin on a gas tank.

  6. $400.00 gota be kidding thats crazy.
I thought might try to make one but use a small elc. blower instead of a compressor.
I think the little blower I have will do more than 17CFM

I want to make something to suck the fumes - I looked at a vac. at the welding supply it was on sale $1000.00:o
