  3. Sorry I meant charcoal not coal. I meant that if I can make charcoal in my forge not coal. Sorry bout that.
  4. I found out that I like charcoal more than coal because the only coal I can get around here is anthracite. The only problem is that charcoal is pretty darn expensive. I looked into ways of making coal, but I don't really want to get a 55 gallon drum and make some huge fire and I can't take over all my dads garage. I was wondering if I could make charcoal in my brake drum forge or does it have to be a larger container like a 55 gallon drum? Thanks
  5. speaking of brass, I saw a video of a guy on youtube and is a member here who casted a brass hammer head. I want to do this because i need a hammer that i can use for punches and chisels etc. My only concern is heating the brass. Is there a way I can prevent poisoning? Thanks
  6. ok thanks, i will go get some bolts and make a grate out of them like what Glenn did.
  7. I had this drain strain for a while and am gonna use it for my coal grate in my forge. I am only concerned because I know some drains are chrome, and others are stainless. Can someone tell me which it is? Thanks

Thanks for the help. Next time I do a handle I will do what you guys said for a head or hammer I buy/restore. If I ever make hammers, I will just make the eye of the hammer the exact size of a pre made handle. Thanks

Any tips on how to shape the handle and mount the hammer head? I accidentally mounted the head a bit crooked. Thanks

Hammer handle I made from an old craftsman hammer head i bought. Any tips or tricks will be greatly appreciated. The hard part for me was shaping the handle since using a hardwood. Also I mounted the head crooked. Any tips on how to fix these things? Thanks
  12. So does the hood act as a flue and take away the smoke? Thanks
  13. Ok thanks. So once the fire is lit, you dont use the hood anymore?
  14. Hi Twisted Customs, I was looking for the 55 forge on site, and came across this post. I made a very similar forge that consists of a brake drum with steel piping under it for the ash collection, and air flow, which sits on cinder blocks. I felt that I needed something over my foge to keep in heat, and get rid of the smoke as well. I cam across this and loved how you made a cover for it, and i was wondering what you used to make it? Also I didn't know I could get charcoal up to forge weld temperatures, as I might switch from anthracite to that. Thanks
  15. Hi, I was looking around the forums to make a new anvil stand since I out-grew my other one. I cam across a sandbox anvil stand which I am thinking is perfect. The only problem is that I am a little confused on gow it works, and how to make one. Does the anvil just sit on sand? Also, if I am going to make one I don't have a welder so it will have to be a basic design. I was thinking of making the box out of plywood connected by angle iron, but I don't know how the inside of the stand works with the sand and what the anvil stands on. Can someone please help me out on how o make one, and if you have any pictures of sandbox stands that can help me understand how they work, and also how to build one. Thanks for all your help
  16. Ok never worked with spikes before. Thanks Ok thanks, I paid 12 bucks for 10 including shipping
  17. wow that is a really nice blade! Thanks for the help ok thanks sorry I stink at taking pictures, yeah they are 5/8 inch. Thanks for the help
  18. I recently bought a box of RR spikes on eBay and thought they were bigger than this. Are these the normal size, and if not what's a good seller on eBay to buy from? About 6-1/2 in long and 1/2 in thick on the square part. Thanks
  19. Hi, I am looking into making or buying a gas forge mainly for knives. About how much does the fuel cost to run the forge on a regular day of forging? I heard coal forges are cheaper to run. Thanks
  20. Alright thanks. How wide is yours? Mine is about 3 inches and I'm not sure if it's wide enough. Thanks
