Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I've run out of coke and have been looking for some. I contacted Symonds near Crediton and they stock coke in 20Kg bags. I haven't managed to find anyone closer that stocks any I was curious as to why the Westpoint Forge were going over to coal, I always assumed that coke was an easier fuel to use? cheers

Yes it was the heat treating that I messed up, I figured out what I did wrong. A hole in the ground would have been easier as the anvil was on the floor so I was standing up to get bits out of the forge and then crouching down to work them. It was a good work out for my legs but not the most ergonomic of working areas. I want to get things set up to make life a bit easier on myself.

I agree with Frosty, TP and Charles. I probably am over thinking things, maybe the design isnt as critical as I think it is or at least wont be for me. I will go with a firepot about 9inches square and 3 inches deep. Try and keep along the lines of the Glenn's 55 and I should be fine.

I had it running for about 2-3hours and burnt 12.5kg It has a grate in the bottom that gets air all the way to the sides, I think the fire is just too big for what I need.

What do you mean by size, weight? Its about 18" long and the top is about 5" wide

Thanks for all the advice, I wont try and improve it. I'll give it a good clean up and get it mounted at a good working height.

If Im honest Im not that sure what a build diary would add Might it be helpful for other new starters? I'd never heard of billet welding, but it quick google makes it look like you could, it does look more suited to that. I think I'll put in the corner of the shed and save it for future use.

Hello again. This is my current forge and it works quite well, but burns epic amounts of coke and is hard to use for anything longer than 12". I've been doing some reading and I can see where we went wrong when I built this one. So I've been thinking of converting it into something more like this: http://www.blksmth.com/forge_my_portable.htm Does anyone have any opinions of this forge? Would anyone be interested in a build diary? cheers

I have an old anvil and I can't see any makers marks on it. More importantly there doesn't seem to be a flat spot anywhere on the top of it! Am I right in thinking if I were able to grind the top flat I would go through whats left of the hardened material?

I just signed up after reading a lot of posts on here. I had a go at forging things years ago with mixed results. I just got the bug again and dragged out a few bits and made some pinch bars from old coil springs. They didn't turn out too well, but I really enjoyed the process. I've realised a lot of my kit is not ideal so I apologise in advance for all the questions! Cheers Anthony
