G'day fellas I would like some advice on this anvil http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Anvil-Blacksmith-280-kilo-480LBS-VINTAGE_W0QQitemZ330396627837QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_ToolsHardwareLocks?hash=item4ced2c737d , it appears that the heel has been broken and some attachments welded on in its place. The fact that the heel is broken is not of huge consequence to me, although the welding may have affected the temper of the face if not done properly. I like the weight and the physical dimensions and face appears to be in good nick. I have messaged the guy and there appears to be no numbers or names stamped on the anvil, but it appears to be at his Mothers place and he doesn't seem to know much about it and I would guess it's a tad heavy for his Mum to check underneath for any markings. the trouble is this town is a good 7 hours from where I live, I'm willing to make a weekend of the trip and stay somewhere nice with the missus, but am I wasting my time and money bidding on it?

Frosty good to see your back and well and truly on the mend. My wife has been keeping me posted on your progress via Debs Facebook page, she seems like one heck of a women, I'd be keeping that one. I nearly had a similar accident a few years back felling a Eucalypt with a foot and a half diameter. it too, unbeknown to me had a rotten core and nearing the end of the cut it gave way suddenly and a 3 foot leg flew up and nearly clobbered me. I must say I haven't cut down a large tree since, it gives you a new found respect for them.
Once again welcome back

Looks like a great setup, I cant wait to get my portable setup housed in a bench similar to that. I was just wondering, those blowers should put out enough air, are the holes in the bottom of your fire pot big enough?

Sorry Dale just caught this, looks good bloke. Those wrapped brass collars are a great feature and dont worry about the legs, they look fine. We are our own worst critics and if you had made them with a that'll do attitude they probably would look crap.

Here's their website, Home page of the Illawarra Coke Company . They will sell you as little or as much as you like, unfortunately they don't deliver. Sales are from their Coalcliff site.

Ditto from me, Glenn's hospitality is second to none. I meet new friends, learnt heaps and got to see the 7CWT Massey in operation which was a great experience. Thanks again to all concerned.

Thanks for the comment, nah, I forgot about the other set of wings. My wife and eldest daughter pointed it out too. Will have to make another pair.

Thanks for the comments guys, the dog is actually sitting in the bed beside me now, gnawing on a bone.
Biggundoctor, I never thought to make a lantern as well, I will have to have a go and post pictures when it's done.

Welcome aboard plaidpaint, there is plenty of info here and plenty of blokes ready to offer assistance. There also seems to be few get togethers happening so we might see you at one soon.

A great compliment to your wife's artwork, I like the textures in your frame. two very talented people.

Here is a bed I made for our dog and a stand to hang a garden lantern on. The dog bed is my own design built to suit the size of the mattress. The lamp stand comes from one I saw at the hardware store, it was one of those ones that is cold bent with no tapers, welded together by a 5 year old and powder coated in green and they wanted $75 for it!

This afternoon I had a go at forging a Dragonfly. The body is made from 20mm round and the wings from 6mm round. The eyes were made by splitting the end with a chisel and forging the separate halves. .

This is sad news indeed, I always found Mike's posts fascinating and informative. His contributions will indeed be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Thought it might be a special device to hold Dale's shoulder.

That is truly awesome news I will be making inquiries and keeping April free. This is a unique opportunity for Aussies, thanks to all concerned.

Bentiron, good advice from Glenn there, you don't need to spend a fortune. the camera I use for my photos is only 3 megapixals and as Glenn said, I shoot everything at the maximum resolution then use free software to reduce the file size to enable me to upload to the forum.

Good to hear so many positive reports about Frosty's condition. As Jerry Carroll said in an earlier post, Prayer works!

In an earlier post I said I hadn't seen any news on the project web site since August. I have the site saved as a bookmark and was explaining to our 22 yr old how I hadn't seen any news when he casually said "Do you refresh the page?", and lo and behold all the latest news and photos magically appeared! That large section of branch looks amazing, apologies to the team for my error.

Thanks Dale, that'll great. I sent 6 leaves down not long after the project started, but I haven't done any since. It'll good to have another crack at it. Moony's weekend gettin' closer I'm countin' the days. Big month this one , got Moony's at the end and next week all being well getting a gum leaf/celtic knot tattoo.

Strine, thanks for the update, I'm sure there's plenty of blokes out there keen to know how things are progressing. As there appears to be more leaves than originally estimated I can understand that there is plenty of work to be done and I appreciate you taking the time to keep us informed.

G'Day Mike, Not sure if this helps but on reading the material specs you posted I noticed the Australian Standard they had listed in the end column, so I did some research and found it is a standard pertaining to cast steel.According to a chart I found on another website AS2074 L6B is a reasonably hard cast steel http://www.grahamcampbell.com.au/MaterialsCS.html . It might pay to give the foundry another call to see if they elaborate on the process they use to make their anvils and whether they harden the face at all.

P.S probably check on the dimensions and weight too, let us know how you go.
