  1. Hello all,
We are getting ready for our Feb. meeting on the 21st. Mike "yesteryearforge" Tanner will be our demonstrator.

Mike has been blacksmithing for well over 20 years and owns and operates Yesteryear Forge, Yesteryear School of Blacksmithing, and is the founder of The Blacksmith Guild of Virginia.

Mike's demo will be based solely on scrap plate steel. He will show us his use of scrap plate to create several forged forms that can be used with candle holders, sculptural bases, and several other applications. Mike does not demonstrate very often. He usually is the facilitator behind the scenes and it will be a great day with him out front showing off his skills!

    All are welcome!
We will get under way at about 9:30am with announcements and the demo will run from 10am-about 4:30pm with an hour break for lunch and Iron in the Hat.

The meeting will be at Yesteryear School of Blacksmithing in Crewe VA. Click here for more details and a link for personalized directions:

  2. Welcome!
You are more than welcome to come on down to one of our Blacksmith Guild of Virginia meetings at the Yesteryear School of Blacksmithing in Crewe. You will find a good number of smiths here from all over the state at our monthly meetings.

Also "Covforge" (Travis) is on here and can tell you about the Tidewater Guild too if you are interested!

Virginia is overflowing with blacksmiths!!! Glad to see another on here on the forum.

  3. Elmer said he will have some of his tools for purchase at the demo. Hopefully a hammer or two as well.

Also there are several openings for the 4 day class
and only 2 openings left for the 3 day class.

It is not too late to get in on this opportunity.

  4. It is actually pretty easy to open. There is good resistance to keep it closed to hold a lettter or something.

The base is 3" x 7". It weighs maybe 5 pounds. I forget what the parent stock of the pin started out as....maybe 1 1/4" x 5/8"....I am not sure.

Mike took me to the shop and helped me find what was close to the wooden one I had.

    :)
    thanks guys...

  5. James,
    Nice Idea!!!

I may go buy a few BIG washers and throw them in the forge and beat them up a little to make them match.

    Thanks for the idea.

Ted I appreciate the positive mojo. I always feel a little weird posting photos of my stuff on here. There is a lot of really nice work and I just do not see myself on any level close to it...

  6. I just finished up my Christmas projects for this year. I decided to make big clothes pin paper weights. I was walking around Ben Franklin (craft supply store) with the family. I picked one up made out of wood and asked Mike if he thought I could forge that out....So I ended up buying a dozen over two trips and found some steel close to the size of the wooden parts. Mike was a big help as always...

It is forged. All the holes were drilled. And the pin is plug welded to the base. All of it was tumbled and wire brushed then assembled.

The springs are from the originals I bought in the store. I had to drill holes for the springs for it all to work. The slots in the top and bottom were not working AT ALL!

I painted the springs flat black, and the rest of it was sprayed with clear.

I also put felt on the bottom to keep it from scratching up the tables.

This was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. The next batch will be a lot better, but these turned out okay for my first try.

  7. Nice job Larry.
Everyone always has an opinion about something....but the important thing here is the fact you made it for your son's memorial garden. I think it is fine just the way it is!

Sorry for you and your family's loss. I hope making this helped in the grieving process...post some photos of the memorial garden too when it is completed.

    Regrads,

  8. Yeah those are the guys...they did carry that 560 pound monster from the truck to the stand. Needless to say they are MY friends!!!

The demo will be at the school which is on site at Tanner Tool and Machine. It is in between the two Southside Electric Buildings on thwe way out of Crewe...heading to Luck Stone.

Here is a link to the guild NEWS page. There is a place you can click from there to get exact directions through google maps.

Elmer will also be teaching two classes the week after the demo as well if you are interested in that.

Let me know...I can help you on all levels here.

  9. We (Yesteryear School of Blacksmithing) build our hoods with NO smoke shelf. And we also have 12" square going out and up above the peak of the roof on all 7 forges. With all the doors open and wind blowing they still draw that fire sideways. I think no matter what it all comes down to the throat size of your pipe and how high you go with it. We do sell them ready for a 10" round pipe to mate up to it...

    Here are some photos.
