  1. I really appreciate all the comments about the webcam. The credit for this needs to go to two people:
    1. Mike "yesteryearforge" Tanner. He had the idea and got the ball rolling.
    2. Adam Russell. He stepped in and made this work when everyone said it could not happen. (it is actually a wireless feed from the shop about 100+ feet to the house...then to the host site: camstreams.com, then out to you guys) His understanding and imagination keeps you guys out there connected.

The goal of The Blacksmith Guild of Virginia is to make as many learning opportunities available to as many people as possible. This is just one more way to reach out to those who may need, or want the opportunity.

We are discussing and looking into improvements down the road. Right now we are using a security camera, my guitar amp, and Mike's laptop. I think on down the road it will all get better as we can find and use better "stuff". We are on the threshold waiting for better technology at something we can use in this setting.

    :)
I am prod to be a part of something so fun!
    Thanks.

That is how I want to do it. I want it very simple but usable. Our guild has an upcoming trade item that is a forged tool...so I thought this would be a good lesson for me on a lot of different levels. I want to make as much of it as possible...except for the blade. I want it to be as few pieces as possible and nothing really ornate.

Simple and Usable is where I want to go with this. Maybe even based off of an antique??...??? Don't know. But I am determined to start on it this Saturday during the "Blacksmith Day" event thing going on at Mike's shop through Antracit...

Thanks for all the help so far guys..keep it coming. I need all the help I can get! LOL!

  3. Anyone out there have any information or photos of any hand forged hacksaw frames? I am beginning to think through one and would like to see some examples or read up on what others have done...

I think I am going to order the back issue of Blacksmiths Journal on it too...

    Thanks.

  4. I just wanted to let everyone know that there are still a few open "seats" in this class. We would love to have come and be a part of the Yesteryear School experience with two of the best instructors in the country for chasing and treadle hammer work. I have spoken to several people who took this exact class offering at John C. Campbell and LOVED IT! And this time around it is over HALF THE PRICE! $225.00 USD for a class that usually runs close to 500 bucks!

Please let me know if you have any questions. I am happy to help answer them!

  5. Jason just corner Mike at the next guild meeting...like he said. He will take you through the pros and cons of all of them. I remember from the last meeting the concern on the horn shape. I know you want to have the horn like what is on Mike's 1245 pound one on the 330. Maybe Dick can ring in on it here. He is an IFI member: "blksmth"

One day I will own a Refflinghaus...after seeing Mike's two, and talking with Dick about them. I am sold on that anvil brand 100%.

  7. Last August we had Dick Nietfeld come demo for us and he showed us his eye bender.

    Here it is:
    hinge.jpg

How it works is he drilled a hole that is the diameter of the pin + 2 times the material...so if the pin is 1/2 inch, and the material is 1/4 inch then the hole needs to be 1 inch.

He cut a slot in the block for the material to go into...the slot is sawed out a little ver sized to the material being used.

How it works is he places the block on the floor heats up the bar and hammers it into the slot. The material bends around the hole and is done in one heat. when done the block slides off the newly formed eye. Pretty neat and simple idea.

Hope that makes sense. I will see if I have any photos of him doing it.

You can also contact him at Shady Grove Blacksmith Shop Just tell him Peyton sent you over there about his hinge eye bender...he can help you with the idea also.

    :-)

  8. Alfred Haberman has passed away today. April 28th.
    He was 77 years old...

He is survived by his wife Maria, and his daughter Christine.

This is a very sad day for all of the blacksmithing world for the loss of a Great visionary of design, technique, and enthusiasm that has been felt by thousands all over the world.

Please ring your anvil the next time you are in the shop.

This has been reported on the ABANA website from Peter Elga

  9. Well I just wanted to share a few things with everyone so you know what is going on and what is being planned.

    1. The April Meeting went GREAT! Clay did some really cool things with his flowers and blossoms...if you couldn't make it you missed a great DEMO!

    2. Camstreams is the company that hosts the webcasts for FREE and has doubled our bandwidth for the next upcoming meetings. AWESOME! This means more people out there can watch and enjoy! Thanks to Camstreams for making this opportunity more available to everyone interested.

    3. We have been fortunate enough to have 40+ people at our meetings so far this year. We are in the planning stages of moving the meeting site to Yesteryear School of Blacksmithing in Crewe Virginia when all the preparations have been made. This will NOT happen until late summer so do not worry! This new site will allow the guild to do more with our meetings and have more room for people to be comfortable and enjoy the day!

    4. The next meeting will be on May 17th with ELMER ROUSH AND HIS WIFE LYNDA METCALFE doing a joint demonstration. This is a really unique thing that they have never done before so it is going to be one for the record books.

    5. Thanks so much to everyone who has been participating in the Iron in the Hat every month. Your participation is really helping! PLEASE KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING!

    6. We got our 20 members for ABANA! Which means on July 19th there will be a special ABANA APPRECIATION event held with DOUG MERKEL doing a demonstration celebrating the life and memory of the lateDoug Hendrickson. More details to come soon...

    Did I miss anything???

Oh yeah...there is a lot this guild owes to Mike and Linda Tanner for their dedication and open arms in allowing us to hold the meetings at their shop, AND to feed us every time. Their hospitality has a lot to do with the great time had by all every month. My hat is off to them for their dedication and enthusiasm not only for the guild but for blacksmithing in general. Thank You!

    Peyton

  10. Looks like we are going to be going on for another month with a limited amount of space to watch the webcast. I have put in a request with the host company for more bandwidth and am awaiting a response. They are in England and very busy I am sure...

I will post the HOT link to the webcast "room" around 8-9am or so right here.

We are going to ramp up the resolution and hope it comes through better so those with high speed will be able to view it. Those with dial up I am not too sure if it will load...there will also be a chat room there too so sign in with your handle and y'all can talk about what is going on.

Adam will be heading it up again for us...I pop on from time to time to say hi from the main computer too...so...

Hope to "see" you guys Saturday!

    Peyton
