Fire management is an early lesson mate, learn to turn the air off before you leave, better still, put the fire out before you leave. How will you be when you wake up in the morning and find out you left the gas on?

Hello Nortwoodsman, mate imo the best steel for you to use for this project is mild steel, simply because it's easy to work. To make a sword shaped object out of mild steel...not so easy, but a lot easier than a steel that JPH would use mate. Have a go at it, shouldn't take long, don't worry about the grind yet just get it straight first (don't mean to dishearten you here but straight enough is NOT straight.) When you do get it straight...ok that's enough, post a pic when you get it this far.

Mate hit it with a wire wheel on a grinder and wipe on some cooking oil and it will look like a million $. Buff out any sharp edges from breaks and the use it. 

In a word, no. But re-bound is not the be-all and end-all either. imo

Rotate it often so's you don't burn the edges.

Cut it across the grain 1.5" thick, then bust it up with your hatchet into smaller pieces.

Your drift is too square, try for a more oval shape.

Better to spend that time practicing practiced hammer blows than forging a flatter mate. Will save you a lot of work.

In the meantime mate forge a pointer and dig your clinker out.

Soaker pads for the front and rear crankshaft bearings, oiler will oil Conrod bearing via a pivot, will need cleaning well.

Hmm, might be worth a look in the hollow under the motor then to.

Mate there is likely to be a fair bit of gunck in the bottom, the missing bits may be in there. Give this area a good clean out as there is some nooks and crannys in the bottom under the bearing shelf.

15min away is worth the drive just to do the homework mate.

Maybe a handy tool when used properly, but it is getting used all the time, might be time for me to stop reading IFI and spend more time forgoing me thinks.
