  1. Ok, I was informed the other day that a friend's grandfather was a smith in the coal mines, still has a working forge and is over 90yrs old. It came up in a conversation between my friend and her grandfather that she knew someone who was into smithing and he told her that he would like for me to come up and check out his shop and chew the fat. So, I am going to try to put together a list of questions that might be worth asking. Please feel free to give advice, questions, insight or anything else that would help to carry his story on.

  2. Marc, nice work, and I am curious to see what others can make with rr spikes. My last attempt was to make a door knocker with a leaf spring backplate and a tennoned spike using the eye of the spring as the pivot point, but it ended up in the scrap pile after overworking the spike which eventually broke. Maybe it is time to give it another try ;)

  3. Ok, I know that this is for things that follow us home, but what about I WISH IT WOULD FOLLOW ME HOME :) I recently took a trip (haha snooping is fun) behind my office to where the are scrapping an old foundry not expecting to find much of anything and within just a few minutes I was slobbering all over myself at the sight of two large Nazel hammers, some huge vertical bandsaws, several grinders, belt grinders, drill presses, huge buffing wheels and all kinds of other goodies just sitting there so lonely. I know that if I had the means I could give them such a better life. sigh...

p.s. I will try to get the pictures off of my phone so you can see how lonely they are :)

    OK, here are some pics

  4. This is our first "kind of" project. It is for the funeral home in Burnsville, NC that my brother-in-law Adam works at. They are in the process of landscaping the property and the landscaper wanted these made. This being our first project and us having very little exp. I am fishing for any suggestions on pricing, layout etc.. I have attached a couple of photos of the sketch and windows.

  5. Ok, so I was probably not brushing at a high enough temp and about the smoke, well I have been under the impression that this would "blacken" the piece up a little. Is this true or did I just conjure this up in my head (can't remember where the idea came from) :)

  6. It seems that I am having a hard time getting a brass finish that stands out, it is usually very dull and hardly noticeable. Here is the process I usually use:

    - Black heat then brass
    - Apply beeswax (hot enough to smolder)
    - Green coal in fire and hold over for just a few moments
    - Let Cool
    - Buff with rag (mixed results here, especially if there is excess wax)

Just looking for any suggestions for getting a good finish that has a blackened yet smooth appearance with bright brass highlights.

  7. Well, I just wanted to drop in and say hello since I have not been around in a while. It has been a really great experience getting to meet and learn from you guys/gals this past year, although I really hate that I was unable to attened October's meeting at the Clay Hill Forge and November's meeting at Metalsmiths, Inc. I need all the help I can get with joinery and meeting someone who has worked in Mr. Yellin's shop would have been pretty cool. I will see ya'll at Sunrise Forge in January. Thanks for all of your help and support.
