  2. Hello
To prevent more speculation about my new designed ''HOFI'' anvil here are some photo's and explanation.

001-002 2 views from the back side withe the adjustable tray
    003 The ''lego''
004 The adjustable tray and the water can under the prichel holes
    008-009 Two top views
001 The water can for instant cooling and the small drift to fall stright in when punching holes
four prichel holes 3/8 inch, 5/8 inch, 1 inch, 1-1/4 inches
The base of the anvil is is big and heavy down and makes the anvil very stable
one can also upset on the base in the rear and front parts
The BAYS allow the steel to go down all the way to the floor
The three leg base plate is 1 3/4'' thick
The three legs on 22 degrees gives a very good and absolute support
Tanvil is ''seating'' on the steel plat with two guide pins and there is no need to ''chain '' or bolt or ''nail'' it
The bottom of the anvil is ground and the plat too ! There is a 100 % contact between the anvil and the steel base
The anvil is 120 kg 265# the width is 4'' the length is 34''
The steel is 6150 very tough steel HRC 55-57
A CD about the use of the anvil will come together with the anvil
The anvils are now in test use for three month at my smithy and in Germany
The moment i''ll understand that the test time is over we will start to market them
The world distributer will bs Jhannes Angele from ''ANGELE Mschinenbau'' in Germany

THE PRICE IS NOT FIXED YET NOR THE AGENTS IN THE USA
The moment we will be ready it will be announced in the site

  3. In 2004 I Was Invited By The Seki Knife Forging Association To Give A Demo Class To 54 Japanes Knife And Sword Smith For A Week.they Wanted To Learn More About Modern Forging And I Was Lucky To Be The One They Invited.
My Translator Was A Student Of Mine That Lived Ther 10 Years To Study The Craft And Art Of The Japanies Tredition Of Knife Forging ,and Spoke Fluent Japanies And To Day He Lives In Potland Oregon.
Heving Been There Lerning A Lot But Still Knowing ''nothing'' On The Tredition
And I Was Forging With Their Hammers Tools Mechnical Hammer And Study The Grinding And Polishing Techniques I Want To Say Something From My Heart And Hopefully Offending No One.
This Is A Very Very Old Tredition One Must Be More Humble And Learn Much More About Before Criticising Or Moking Or Being In Polite To A Fantastic Cultuer With Fantastic Achivment One Must Be More Hamble When He Stands Before 3000 Year Of Tredition.
This Is An International Site And Not Privet American One Think How The Japanies Feel When They Read Some Of The Reaction Here.
I Am Invited To Come Again To Seki Next Year And Stay For A Longer Time
To Study And Learn More Deeply The How And The Why Not Only Knife Forging Also Mokume Gane And Casting.
One Can Not Learn The Cultuer Of A Nation If He Do Not Understand The Spirit.
I Am An ''expert'' Of Doing Things Not Acc To The Tredition And Some Times Against The Tredition But I Love The Tredition I Admire The Tredition But It Is Not A Religone And I Do Not Worship It And Ask Lots Of Questions To Learn And Always Understand More.

  4. Thee Question Is A V E R Y Modern Question And There For The Answers Are Modern Too.
In The Older Time They Did Not Ask This Question And Therefor Did Not Answer.
U Use Them And Forge On Them As They Are .
Like We Are Getting Older And Having Dings Screches Wrinkels ,they Too And That Is The Beuty Of Old Tools

  5. Hello Rick
It Is Not Very Hot On Regular Fire U Can Touch It With Your Hand, but If U''ll Make A Big Fire And In The Summre It Will Go Higher. In My Case I Went Through A Concreat Wall And There Is No Problam, But If U Go Through A Wooden Wall I''ll Sugesst U To Put Around The Tunel Any Insulating Matirial
To Be On The Safe Side.

  6. There Are Some Reasons For The ''squer Tunnel''
1 If The Tunnel Is Round The ''suction'' Of The Smoke Is Done Only In The Center And Not All The Smoke Is Been Sucked In.

2 The Tunnel Is Cut In An Angel That The Upper Part Is Almost Above The Center Of The Fire And That Increases The Suction.

3 The Tunnel Is Welded To The Coke And Tyre Steel Table In A Way That There Is Balance Between The Two Sections From Both Sides Of The Wall And There Is No Need To Fasten It Strong Or Heavy.

4 Because The Cross Cut Of The Tunnel Is A Bit Bigger Then The Chimney The Air And Smoke Slows Down And The Ash Is Falling Down On The Bottom Of The Tunnel And Every 3-4 Years I Open The Rear Cover And Clean By This Almost No Ash Is Going Into The Environment

5 The Upper Part Of The Chimney Is Used To Put A Small Gas Forge For Pree Heating One Can Not Do It With A Round Tube

6 The Connection Between The Pipe And The Chimney Is Very Simple And Stable No Need For Special Elbows Or Arrangements

7 From The Architectural Design It Is Nice And Very Impotent For Me

  7. Only ! In The Usa I Forge On Euroanvil When Teaching Or Demonstratin ,not Because Of My Choice Only Because They Are There !
But In All My Visits In The Stats I Used
    Nimba
    London Patern Many Types
    Kolswa
    Peddinghouse
    Italien Make
    Polish Make
    And Many Others
At My Shope In Israel And In My School I Use Only Europen Style Anvils But They Are 40-100 Years Old Produced Long Before ''euroanvile'' Started.
From All Of This Types I Forge And Preffer Very Much The Hofi Anvil

There is ''no'' ''Czech hammer'' a ''Czech hammer'' is not existing in the Czech republic. The Molnar the Biehal the Josef Muck the Habermann every one of this long time blacksmith families that all of them I know and visited and with all of them with very good relationship are forging with d i f f e r e n t hammer .the hammer that people here and in the us are referring to as the ''Czech hammer'' is the Hofi hammer. It is not a modification of the Habermann hammer (that was invented and forged first by his grandfather). The ''Hofi hammer ''is completely different hammer” and if one looks at the hammer one can see that the design is completely different the balance the handle the longer pien the radiuses and the grinding. The story of the ''Czech'' hammer started when George Dixon in his book on Francis Whitaker the late in the paragraph of hammers. He put a drawing of the Hofi hammer and called it Czech.

In three places in the states the ''Hofi'' hammer is forged

1 At the Ozark School by Mr. Tom Clark that I was teaching at the school for 5 years and Mr. Clark visited my shop in Israel 4 times and I taught him how to forge the Hofi hammer. Tsur Sadan that is now teaching at the Ozark was my student for 4 years at my smithy.

2 The BigBlu by Mr. Dean Curfman that also paid twice a visit to my smithy in Israel twice special to learn how to forge the Hofi hammer and to grind it and also to learn about the quick change system for the air hammer die and about forging other tools that he sells now. The air hammer school is also my idea and I was teaching there the '' free form air hammer system''. Mr. Dean Curfmann also took three classes with me at the Ozark and in NY.

3 Doug Merkel that took also three classes with me two at the Ozark and one at the air hammer BigBlu school.

Now Thomas Dean the story of kissing the hammer.

10 years ago I was invited by BABA to participate in forging elements for the '' niddle'' a huge sculpture the is now located in Newcastle on the side walk along the river. The meeting was in France in doarnane on the brest bay a beautiful fishermen harbor on the channel in brest bay the other side of England. 54 blacksmith from Europe and England took part in the forging meeting.

A young man by the name of Claude was following me like a shadow all the time where ever I moved he was there. After three days he dared to ask me: Mr. Hofi how come you are forging with one hammer only and do it easier and faster then all the others? I with my sense of humor answered him very earnest, clod when you enter the smithy in the morning first thing I do is standing opposite to the anvil take the hammer and kiss it then go around the anvil and kiss again when you do it 7 times the hammer will forge alone.

Next morning he came to me and said Mr. Hofi I tried it and it did not help.

A month later Claude came to me to my smithy in Israel and stayed 1-1/2 years. Now he is married, has two kids, an he is teaching the Hofi system in France.

This story I am telling every where I teach and also kiss the hammer daily.

Sorry for the long story but I think it is nice

The Hofi Hammer Cast Hammer vs Forged Hammer

To my opinion the cast is better then the forged. The deference is small. An amateur will not fill the difference.

The 6150 steel of the cast is a better steel then the c45. The cast is more balanced because casting on a mold I could arrange the steel in a better and more balanced form and there for more ergonomic. I myself forge today mainly with the cast hammer. There is a belief that the forged because the grain re-organizing is better then the cast. Not any more !!

To day with the lost wax system that the air is leaving the mold from all around the mold and not only from the air outlet the grain dispersion in the cast is better. Even in the industry many parts that were forge are cast today. And it is very interesting also that more and more I sell more cast hammers then forged. The people loves them.

  10. first of all check if the hammewr is working in its natueral ryhthem 220- 240 bpm
if less then 220 the belts are slipping tighten them or if worn out change them!
if the belt are ok and the hammer is in the right ryhthem (the check is done when u forge a piece of hard wood and not on idle) check while the hammer is working if u have full recovery means if the day light is acc to the book -i think 91/2'' if very much less and there is no full recovery it means the hammer piston is loosing air on the way up and when it is not going all the way up on the way dowen the hammer is not having full valocity and no power-then check the amount of air that is leacking around the silling collar by putting your hand there --be carefull-- if there is a bIg leakeage u have to repair the silling system and get the right parts from the agent.
this happens when not enough oil is oiling the ram allways more oil is better then less .on the kuhn hammer the oil is been SUPLIED with possitive pump and many times the oil suply to the hammer is lesser do increase the oil amount u have instructions in the book. if all this is ok there are two more things to do 1. on the kuhn the unit is a close box the air is going and coming IN AND OUT through a filter if jamm u have a problam of a insuffitient air coming into the hammer and the out let of air is not free!! cleen the filter.
2 if u take the cover away under the cover there is an adjustable left right rode see if on nutral the marks mech if not adjust it again acc to the book.
there are some more things but it is complicate for me to explain on the mail.
    hope i helped u some
