  1. Hi! Thought I should say an offical greeting here to! As a newbie to the blacksmithing world this is a pretty cool forum. Just a little about me and blacksmithing perhaps...? So "nessesity is the mother of invention" I hear and well, though I don't get to have that notoriety of inventing the art, I started into this with the need for hooks to fit the coat rack that I made for my wife several months ago. "If I can't find a hook I like then dangit I'm gonna make one" was pretty much how it went. With a brieft and distant memory from metals shop in high school and the good ol' places such as you tube and anvilfire, here I am now drooling over the next project and other peoples anvils! I'm sure if your reading this I will be asking you a thousand questions that have already been asked as well as the other thousand that I forgot I already asked. Thanks and see ya around! Nate
  2. Thanks for the replies, definitely helps to get a little feedback. It does look like it's missing some chunks which the seller did not speak to. Even if its a good anvil I think the hardy and pritchel hole will be worth waiting for as far as bang for the buck goes. He was asking 250 which isn't terrible if it's still decent but... thanks ya'll
  3. Found this on the 'ol craigslist and am wondering if it might be worth anything? It does not have a Hardy or pritchell hole and the only markings are "a D H stamped on front". Looking for my first anvil and some advise on this one. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!
  4. Thanks Jim, will do on the personal. I appreciate the 2 cents- from what I've seen so far that was my gut responce but needed to hear some feedback. I definetly thought that about the edges to. I'm itchin to find one but want a decent one to. Thanks Thomas, good thoughts-no fur trader here. Oh yeah- I meant track-not tie.
  5. Here's another cheap/broke newbie trying to figure out if he should throw down $250 for this. I am very new to blacksmithing but am quickly learning that it sure is nice to use the right tool for the right job; so I'm itching for a "real" anvil. Anywho, could anybody comment on this anvil off craigslist? It looks halfway decent, owner said there were not any noticeable cracks and had good 'ping'. Not sure about rebound. I've only been looking in the market for several weeks, so I'm not really sure how much or how cheap I should be looking for. He's also about 2 hours away so it's helpful to know how close to the ball park he is. FYI currently I am using a 60ish pound saw doctors anvil a friend is letting me hit on, (little scared I might should not), or a railroad tie, or a 3/4' steel plate (which by the way I will continue to be thankful for...so I'm not that picky either). Thankyou for any input!
