  1. thanks all i found some sites and am well on my way to a completed paper
  2. in school we're doing are junior paper over to opposing careers we would enjoy just one problem i can't find statistics over full time blacksmiths on any web sites include u.s. department of labor does anyone know any sites that have info about requirements or qualities that would help
  3. i suggest making one i used a old wheel barrel some fireplace bricks a bit of scrap pipe from a muffler shop and a hairdryer and it works like a charm

  5. oh the rose oil is a very good idea and i would've used solder but i was out and i didn't feel like going into town
  6. sing a screwsome roofing copper and a little copper wire i tried to make a copper flower after seeing the blueprints so heres some picks. i'm planning on maybe making one as a corsage for my prom
  7. thank az yeah i kinda skipped basics and jumped to blades on the 2nd day of me smthing while not the prettiest i am still happy with them.

Thanks Don i used a file for the one that still has the end of the railroad spike but after 4 1/2 hours the pitting was still very deep so i used a hand held grinder to try an try and get a edge on it which worked but as you can teel came out a little uneven i have some files at home and will try and even it out. Also sorry about my punctuation skills i've always had trouble with em.
  10. well i finaly did it i hammered out 2 blades the using a hand grinder (which for future reference not the greatest tool for the job) shined em up through may look dark in the picture the lighting on them is evil and put and edge on em there both railroad spikes the whole railroad spike was smithed with my friend and the curved one smithed with my father

  12. i need to make one that nice i made a railroad spike knife for my first but i give it a D+ so it ain't going to be what i show for my first knife but as my first attempt
  13. the anvil i got was my great great grandfathers when i got it it had a large lair of rust and had been sitting in a shed with holes in the roof for the better part of 4 decades

  16. wow nice turned out far better then any of my attempts so far T.T i got some really bad i guess "pitting" is the words in my first knife
  17. the blade was clean i used borax as a flux and the company that makes the saw blades i used uses l-6 through the heat could've been a little low i guess and maybe pete's onto somethin
  18. i'm the super novice at blacksmithing and at my first fire up of the wilson forge we made attempts at using saw blades that are l-6 steel but when attempting the forge weld we ran into a few problems so anyone have any tips and hints for me?:confused:
  19. well all i know is what i read i have no real experience because still getting the lasts bits for my charcoal forge but the way i read it in a bladesmithing book the man coated the blade with a mix of asphaltum and bees wax the cut the design in the wax and dipped it into a container of ferric acid of course tape sounds alot easier
