  1. I have a milwaukee porta-band. I use it a lot more than my chop saw. I can put a piece in the vice and cut, no sparks, but you are limited to size, I think mine is 4" sq. limit and the variable speed is nice also, plus you can take it to the work. It's one of my favorite tools.

  2. was 30 (1980) running electrical conduit up 10 stories, and had an apprentice who could weld and a buzz box, he showed me how. I bought the welder in the photo below.

After that job the union dispatcher called on a friday and asked if I thought I could certify for a power house job. I spent all weekend reading and burning rod. Monday three of us showed up to do coupons, spent most of the day trying weld vertical with no luck when one guy gets a fitter to show us how. He said just watch what I do. I did and it worked. They did a bend test and I got the job. They had me certify later (kind of a hokey deal)

I love to weld but don't have the talent to be real good at it.

    Howdy,
I think I met you several years ago, I was doing wrought work on a residence at the Running Y resort, and met a sparky named Mark from the Rogue valley who did a little smithing... Good to see you here.
    Mike

Mike, that was a great railing you did at the "Y". I've always regretted that I didn't make it to the Hanly Farm demo.
Welcome welcome :) It is always nice to see more Pacific Northwesterners!

Thanks RC I'm amazed at the response I've received here.
Mark you are welcome in my shop anytime Central point is about a beautiful 40 min drive to Williams.

What a great offer Mike you guys are unbelievable.
  4. I just found this site and I've been resurecting my shop the last couple of months. While cleaning up I realized I needed to be able to move my anvil easily because the space is multi purpose. So her is what I came up with.

I made a little pocket for a crow bar to fit in, to lift the stand and insert the wheels, roll around the shop and lift to remove the wheels.

It's not finished yet, still need to anchor it to stand and make hardie, tong and hammer holders.

  5. Just found this site a couple of days ago, seems like a great bunch here.
I'm an electrician by trade and learned to weld on the job 27 yrs. ago, pretty much self taught. Got interested in knives in the late '70's and started collecting blacksmithing tools (mostly garage sales) and never seem to make enough time for learning as I would like. The last few months I've been reclaiming my shop which had been taken over by storage and neglect. I have a 25# little giant that needs a rebuild, a knife that I started a couple years ago that needs to get done. I've found lots of inspiration here and look forward learning and sharing here.
